Good for Tampa... kinda bad for Elias Pettersson. Unless you just assume that Tampa Bay contracts don't impact the market, I guess.

Does this set a range for a Gaudreau?

This is actually a great deal for a superstar 1C.

I wish the NHL could find a way to equalize state tax. Something as simple as "Your cap hit is your takehome pay AFTER tax"

But double the property tax. Tax debates are never as simple as most imply when they make this argument.

Apparently anyone with a decent accountant can make none of this matter. It's just more excuses we give for Canadian teams.

Weather sucks and the fans care too much. That's enough for most people to stay way.

Property tax doesn't scale to millionaires.

Players in Canada can use an RCA (Retirement Compensation Arrangement) where they can move up to 50% of their income. This work really well if a player retires outside of Canada in a lower Tax area. Although NHL player can use it, it was thought to be such an advantage that the NBA has panned the practice for the Raptors.

Considering Point is a centre and has shown brilliance in the playoffs, you have to go down from here for Johnny's #.
I think 8X8 is what it will end up.

Point > Gaudreau > Landeskog

I would think Gaudreau gets a 8.25 x 7 or 8 years x something under 8m but over 7.

well deserved contract. Point has found another gear in the playoffs - Gaudreau should spent time watching his highlight reel or call him up and ask how to find another gear when the paycheques stop and your need to keep playing

You get taxed when withdrawing from a RCA. You pretty much give up future capital gains deduction for a tax deferral and the money is trapped in Canada.

Not that great from millionaires that retire in their 30s.

He's going to single handedly raise Calgary's GDP per capita by around 8 dollars
