that seems really low. Ducks aren't convinced Zegras is their guy?

I guess when you're not worried about your American bolting for an American market you can still get a hell of a deal on a bridge contract.

Spittin Chiclets said they were offering $4 over 2 or something.

Yeah I heard the Ducks were pushing hard for 2 years instead of 3.

He would still be an RFA after this deal. Good contract for the Ducks.

You'd think Anaheim would want an 8 year deal before he pops. Maybe Zegras is betting on himself though and didn't like the numbers on a long term deal.

Seems like a mistake not to lock him up long term but maybe Zegras didn't want that.

Zegras is going to bend them over in the next negotiating window.

I've read multiple times Pat Verbeek is a tougher negotiator than Yzerman. Perhaps this was his work to keep numbers low.

$5.75M on a short-term deal for a 65 point player who is still an RFA... Seems fair.

If it's an 8 year deal, it's probably around $8.5M

I don't know about that. Rather than have him from 22 to 29 and than face a Lindholm decision they have his 22-24 years for cheap and can do the 8 year deal to get his 25 to 32 year old seasons.

So long as they have not sewered their relationship with the player this could work out really well as they get three good productive years at the front for cheap and can still get a lot of Prime years in the next deal and not be forced to do a long term deal that takes him into his mid to later 30's.

This is going to cost them in 3 years which does not make sense as that is likely when they will be competitive.

Carlson and Zegras could be RFA's the same summer and will still have big money committed to Strome, Gibson and Killorn.

But if the cap starts to escalate quickly and they are looking to compete in a year or 2, things could just start to be looking good and instead of $8 mil a year now it could be $10-11 mil in 3 years.

I could see Zegras putting up 80+ especially if Leo is a star as well.

But if I could pay him less, is that not better? They are rebuilding now and have millions in cap space so I'd rather pay more for 3 years knowing it will be much less for the last 5.

Cap will go up, his contract likely goes up even if he stays a 65-point guy.

We will see, but he's had little to play with the last couple years. Leo is a star, I could see 90 even. They will be paying him way too much soon.

He's still an RFA, and I'm sure the Ducks will get another good deal at the end of this. Never underestimate the value of existing in a privileged market where players and their families will feel pressured to sign just to avoid getting traded to Canada.

I don't see why they wouldn't pay him more for more term. Especially when they have tons of cap space for now.

Zegras is a bit of a one trick pony. Good bridge deal by the Ducks .
