Default Friedman: Flames have begun contract negotiations with Gaudreau

Per Hailey Salvian at The Athletic

Quote:
My sense is that Gaudreau’s feelings on re-signing in Calgary have not changed. And that, yes, we can take his comments at face value. However, at this point, it is my understanding that there have been no serious negotiations between the Flames and Gaudreau’s camp.

I don’t think it’s anything to panic about (yet) for fans who want to see him back. The lack of talks is likely due to how many moving pieces there are in Calgary this offseason — with potential trades — and the fact that Seattle expansion still must take place.
A bit surprising. I would have thought this would be priority #1 between the end of the season and free agency.

News Update

Quote:
6. Calgary has begun extension discussion with Johnny Gaudreau. This is purely my guess, but Flames probably have to jump over Matthew Tkachuk’s $7 million per season. He’s at $6.75 million now

Hard to negotiate a contract when you're busy finding the right deal to move him.

I'm not too shocked. Whether or not Gio is taken in the expansion draft will have a huge impact on the cap space (although technically, they both have a year left).

However, after that, I think re-signing Gaudreau should be the priority.

That seems incredibly vague with a lot of qualifiers thrown in.

"My sense"
"At this point"
"My understanding"
"serious negotiations"

Sounds like a writer fishing for clicks when they have no real news, updates or insider info.

^^ The only issue with that is, if we take the report at face value and no negotiations have occurred, that gives them 1 week to come to terms. Not impossible, just constricted I suppose.

IMO him and Tkachuk negotiations should be top priority this summer. Treliving needs to get ready for expansion draft and maybe he looking at trades to help with protect space. But he should be starting talks with these 2 now because it should factor into what he plans to do with them or around them.

I’m not a fan on how he is going about this

Based on a single article on a single website?
We have no idea how he is going about this.
In my view the pinch point is when his NTC kicks in - they need to understand between now and then his real desire to be here and at what price and term.

But let's not over-react to a single column on the subject.

BT is not worried about it, I think he feels no pressure to get the contract done and has every intention to do so. This is a situation where the player wants to stay and the organization wants to keep him. If BT had any intentions on dealing Gaudreau we would have heard he was being shopped by now. It will get done before training camp.

If I were the Flames I’d be keeping all avenues open.

I would think the players that would have the biggest trade return on the roster would be Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Hanifan, Tanev and Markstrom. I can’t see Markstrom, Tanev or Lindholm going anywhere. I’m assuming Giordano is going to get picked up by Seattle.

I would also think the players they’d like to move but will be a lot harder to trade would be Monahan and Lucic.

Gut feel is 3 forwards will be swapped out with a good chance that Gio is also gone. If they aren’t talking to Gaudreau I’m betting he’s the main trade to get someone productive back. I also feel they will trade Monahan for someone elses reclamation project. I think they will use Gio’s cap hit to make a free agent aquisition of a veteran defenseman.

Once the dust settles they are going to have a number if holes to fill though. I think it’s going to be one of the more interesting offseasons in Flames history. It’ll certainly be interesting to watch.

Treliving has shown in the past he’s very patient when resigning players. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t feel any urgency to get contracts talks in before the ntc kicks in.

She has hardly any connection to this team. Kind of weak of Athletic to bring her in from out of Province to cover this team. She could end up being good, but right now she has as much credibility as a Flames insider as O’Dog.

He is also signed for one more year. He gets a MNTC now I guess but its not panic time yet.

Nothing to see here

Neither Johnny nor Tkachuk, for that matter, have much if any incentive whatsoever on their side to discuss their contracts right now.

In my view the Flames are exploring all options. Which include moving the player

I am sure they are talking with his agent as due diligence.

When did/or does his MNTC come into effect for the 2021-2022 season? July 1? July 28 with FA?

I’ve actually been hearing that the Flames and Gaudreau have been having very long and in-depth UNserious negotiations, which may explain the confusion. They’ve taken the route of treating negotiations like some Abbott and Costello bit, with some flavour of Monty Python’s Flying Circus mixed in. It’s all extremely unserious but highly productive. A deal will be reached in no time.
