I have had one for a couple of years. I used it in May really for the first time while out bear hunting is it worked great. I would not hesitate to reccomend it to you.

I guess I should add that I wasn't using the lantern, but the portable unit. The work on the same premise though. Again. A+ for the Thermacell.

The Thermacell has a butane heater in it. You slide a pad that has a repellent on it over the heater. When the pad is heated, it releases the repellent. It works over an area of about 15' x 15'. Even when it is windy, the mosquitoes just stay away. There is very little smell, pretty much unnoticeable. It was great for Bear hunting. The mosquitoes were thick, but turn on the Thermacell, and they just disappear in a few minutes.

I know Bass Pro and Walmart carry the portable Themacells.

How much would one be looking to pay for this sorcery?

Mega Bump -

I’m getting eaten alive in my backyard these evenings.

Other than your typical DEET products, anyone have an effective solution? Has anyone tried any of the new fangled electronic devices?

I have a few of them and the Off brand.

For sitting outside their little table top model works well and does the job. The belt type model is good for hiking, fishing etc. We also bought an Off mosquito lamp that works similar and found it works well too. Much cheaper too as you can just put in an Ikea T light candle in there instead of their butane method Thermacell uses.

There's electric rechargeable Thermacell ones now too, I got one for my sister who does some camping. I haven't heard back how well it works.

They work extremely well. The only downside to these is the cost of the pads and that once you put one in you have to use it because it doesn't hold its power if you pack it up and use it a week later. if your using it for 4+ hours its great because I notice a pad lasts about 4-6 hours. Dinner outside for 2 hours can get really expensive.

They work really well but you're also not supposed to eat or drink with them on so I guess it depends how worried you are about that.

I would highly recommend Pi Active as a DEET-free alternative bug spray. Works great on mosquitos, flies, and especially ticks.

You can get it at Superstore, Shoppers, etc.

I use it during the summer and early hunting season since there's no smell to it either. It's derived from the leaves of hot pepper plants and works like gangbusters.

Just an FYI - the active ingredient in PiActive is Icaridin (aka Picaridin, goes by some other trade names) which is now the main deet-free alternative in the market and is readily available in other, cheaper brands.

I agree it works really well, and we've been using the CarePlus brand for a few years, but now you can get Off! Deet free deep-woods and it is Icaridin based, and usually 1/3 of the price (or used to be)

Just as effective as deet without all the downsides (impacts on synthetic materials, gross smell/feel, etc) and can be used on clothes and kids much more readily.
