Oilers re-sign RNH (8yrs, $5.125 mil AAV, full NMC)
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Hearing EDM and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins have made significant progress on an extension. Sounds like in the area of 8x$5M. This was a long, hard negotiation — but both sides grinded to get it done.

Oilers and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins set to announce a new 8 year 41 million dollar deal today. Includes a no movement clause.

I thought that money would be better spent elsewhere for them.

The money is okay but the term is way too long. I don't think he's going to be a $5 million player in the back half of the contract but I imagine the Oilers are banking on the salary cap rising a lot over the term. He's become more of a powerplay specialist than 5 on 5 scorer and I'm not sure why they would want to lock him up for that long. The NMC is also a big negative.

Eight years? Wow.
The AAV is in Edmonton's favour but that's a long time to pay The Tenderness.

Yeesh… sure it’s good value now but that contract has a chance to become underwhelming to say the least.

Why would you not wait until the expansion draft is over? Seems like a dumb move.

Think this is a really good contract.
RNH gives up some salary in favor of ultimate security with a long term deal and full NMC.
Both sides should be happy with this one unfortunately.

This is a good contract. I don't see RNH slowing down much into his mid-thirties. AAV is quite low. Lower than Backlund's.

The thing about this contract is that it's max term and the team doesn't get any better as RNH is now the flag bearer for organizational failure being the longest tenured Oiler. It's kind of like selling out long term to maintain the status quo.

8 more years with that dumpster fire? Yikes. Thoughts and prayers to RNH and his family.

They are so thin up front they are talking about protecting Kassian and Archibald so not a concern for the Oil.
I like that cap hit but I do wonder if Nuge will age like Turris and the Oil could be in trouble on the back end of this deal.

Nah, he had a choice. Some people just like crappy situations.
He could have gotten more on the open market so he must really like losing. Are they going to try and bring back Taylor Hall on the same contract?

Why would they protect Kassain? They should be exposing him in hopes of ridding themselves of that contract.

He gave on AAV to get more term. Sure the contract will stink at the end, that's the cost of doing business now. They are in win now.
Edmonton would prefer that AAV for 4 years, but that contract was not on the table.

The one time a halfway decent player actually takes a haircut to stay. But you have to offer term.

Seattle can still select pending UFA. Remember Vegas drafted Deryk Engelland from us and he was a UFA

Not a bad contract. Decent AAV and will not hurt the team once the cap starts going up with TV contracts and helmet ads. At least the Oilers will have someone still remaining from one of their rebuilds when McDavid leaves half way through RNH extension.

If they are in win now shouldn't they be looking at getting better? They lose a lot of salary cap flexibility signing a 28 year old non-elite player to an 8 year contract with a NMC. I think the value is great for the next three years but I just can't fathom any team in the league looking at RNH and thinking they need to lock up that player for 8 years even if it brings solid initial value.
