Default News alternative to Twitter?

Like many, I currently use Twitter for news....both finance and sports. It works well if you follow the right folks.

The problem is I don't use nor care about the social part of it. And it's the replies and comments that is becoming more of a cesspool all the time.

Has anyone found an alternative to Twitter for news feeds? Or even an app that sees twitter newsflow but filters out comments?

Reddit?

Reddit is by far the most responsive and up to date IMO, especially if you like related chatter. I would advise you subscribe to subreddits that have good moderation. r/worldnews is a great source for the latest things around the globe.

I like the Flipboard app. Follow the topics you're interested in and it will feed you the stories.

Reddit has really good hockey coverage on r/hockey including a bunch of "ask me anythings". Ovi did an AMA and actually responded to a question of mine which was pretty cool.

Feedly, and RSS feeds. I'm kinda baffled so few people use rss feeds these days, it's the ideal way to get info.

RSS feeds are pretty old school. Definitely good, but also dwindling in popularity and thus, content (slowly).

Not sure if this is supposed to be sarcastic, but reddit is terrible for news unless you're looking for partisan spin from the fringes of both sides. Its a horrible echo chamber and breeding ground for the worst of society.

Whatever floats your boat. Reddit is good for breaking news, where links in news-based subreddits are from news sources. Additionally, on-going coverage of in-the-moment happenings (e.g. protests, riots) are fairly good for providing relevant information.

I think I've only had an issue with that once. For news it's perfect. Being old doesn't mean useless! One of the few technologies they got right, it doesn't need tweaking and it just works.

I more so mean it’s getting to the point where less and less sites are going to be incorporating RSS feeds because the popularity is waning.

I agree it’s great though.

Reddit is insufferable for readability.

Like, what? What am I missing? I see extreme local stories like the brentwood massacre, and I see some world news, but not much. And to be honest even if world news does make it to CP in it's own thread, our local lawyers and debaters will have it going in bull**** circles within 30 posts, anyways.

Try Alien Blue if its the UI that is the problem. Reddit is the best source of general information and the best internet culture tap in du jour. The zeitgeist of the day IMO.

I've been many places on the internet and hung out in many dives, but Reddit is like the mall in the middle.

Is hitting up the Calgary Herald out of the question?
Serious question - all of my info comes from the paper and National news broadcasts.
