So I awake this long weekend morning with a phone call that 7 cars in our condo's parkade have been hit with smash and grab. Including mine. Some Toonies and Loonies and EasyPay / Esso Speedpass tags are what they grabbed. In return they smashed the driver side window to my Accord Coupe - I'm guessing $600 to replace.
Kinds of puts a crimp in the holiday plans. Guess there's really no point in this post, just a rant....

That's absolutely sick, I-Hate-Hulse. That's so juvenile. Are there cameras installed around your parkade?
I wonder what the possibility of installing plexiglass windows would be. Wouldn't they be almost impossible to smash with a crowbar?

Brutal IHH.
Reminds me of what happened to my brother. His car was parked on the street outside our house, and in the morning the window was smashed and all they took was the face-plate of his CD player. Crimes of opportunity...and a real p*ss off

I hate people who cause expensive damage to property so they can steal small amounts of money or property.
These people are only slightly below people who destroy or damage property for kicks.
I swear, if I ever caught someone vandalizing my property or breaking into my car I would probably lay an ass whipping on them so bad they wouldn't know which hole in their ass to crap out of.

I've always thought that ######ing with another man's car or wife should be a capital crime.....bam... bullet to the back of the head...
The CPS constable came out to take a look at the damage... (which surprised me... I didn't think they would.. will give the guys in blue credit....). Took some notes and objects the guys might have touched. But other than that, it's no different than if I had just been jacked $600 bucks....
Plans for the weekend are shot, since I can't really drive anywhere. Too bad the weather has showers threatening....
No cameras around the parkade but I think we're going to have to go that route. Anybody know of a good shop for these?
Police did a quick look and figured they walked in an open garage door. Doesn't help that I live in a building with the dumbest idiots on the planet who won't wait for the door to close before driving off. (we had a girl last year who decided to charge her battery by letting her car idle in a closed parkade)

Freakin' punks. Last year my car was smashed into....and I only had a TAPE deck! The amateurs couldn't get it out so they destroyed my entire dash by trying to pry it out with a screwdriver. All they accomplished was wrecking both the dash and the tape deck.
$2,000+ in damage...had to get a new dash ordered from Japan. Car was out of commission for over a week as well. I hope Karma takes care of these punks.

Here's the aggrevating thing - those punks were probably a group of 14-year old pansies out to prove their can actually do something like that. It's disgraceful, and quite possibly the biggest p*ss-off as a good sammaritan. If I caught someone like that ruining my car, I'd whack them with a lead pipe, bring them inside, hang them upside down, and tattoo all over their torso "Small weinie, worthless puke."

Ahh Theives
I remember I was in the SE of town and I was at a friends house and stayed over night.
My change tray was open but with 25 cents and maybe a free Mcdonalds burger.
So when im about to leave in the morning I see my window broken <Driver Side> and im freaking out.
And I look at what they steal and all it was the 25 cents and a the Free Mcdonalds Burger
I had to pay $650 to get it fixed!!!!
I hate theives so much
I saw this on The news a month or so ago
They showed some clips from the hidden cop cars.
These guys wanted to steal this car so they get in thinking score we got a new car and then the car locks the doors and they cant get out and the Cops song starts to play. Man it was funny
Sorry about your loss Hulse.
I wish I had that car which spits fire out of the side when someone is trying to break in.

This reminds me of the time my car was broken into via a smashed window. Cost me $300 to replace the glass, and all the thieves made off with was a pair of well-used (worthless) winter gloves. Sorry about your loss, Hulse.

Yep, had it happen to me once too... Smashed my window to steal a pair of speakers that cost me maybe 50 bucks. The only consolation was that it was an older volvo so I was able to find a new window from pick your part for very cheap, and it was easy to replace too. You might want to check them out for a new window if your car is old enough?!

Thanks for all the sympathy... I guess this is something that too many of us CP'ers have been hit with ourselves....
I live in one of the most heavily car prowled areas - Victoria Park - in one of the new condos down there.... the price you pay for trying to get in early into an "up and coming" area (although I live 2 blocks from the Dome woohoo!)
The car is a 2000 so its probably worth getting decent glass for...
We'll just have to button up security here... anyone got a few Claymore mines they can spare?

These guys were very careful not to trigger the factory alarms that are quite common. Windows were typically smashed on the passenger side and they would just lean in to rifle though the globebox and center console. No dome lights were ever triggered.
Unfortunately, I don't think laminated glass would really do much. Would stop them from getting in but ultimately your glass will be spiderwebbed, and you're still going to have to shell out for new stuff.
I need that James Bond car from "Tomorrow Never Dies"., when they're whaling away with sledgehammers with no effect and even fights back with little jabs of electricity....

That's the whole point... to make it more difficult for them to get access so they give up and go to the next one.
Which scenario is better... window broken in both cases, but one has nothing stolen from the inside and the car is where you left it. Or the other, with items stolen from inside and the threat of your car itself being stolen.
I'll take the former.

what really troubles me about thieves is - they're taking the easy way out of work by rendering useless long hours by us little people.
pretty low in character.
had my car broken into in edmonton, $300 damage to the steering column. luckily i have a kill switch that prevents it from being started at all, saved my car.
i was working a crap security job at a-channel (the day before the strike) and had three consecutive 12-hour shifts, working out to $220 take-home. i was out 36 hours of 'work' and at a net loss of $80.
put it all into perspective - i quit the job and moved back to calgary!
but a small part of me was angry enough to plan a take-back-the-streets plan, hang out in the bushes with a bat and wait for the low-life to try again. thank god my friends talked me out of it!
crappy deal about the car, seven cars sounds pretty ambitious. maybe the next parking lot these guys choose will be the wrong one.

guy i went to college with has a brother that struck back - put razor blades along the stereo case, there was blood all over the car and road. and the stereo was wet but recoverable!
he went to the trouble of cutting the extraneous metal off box-cutter blades, not done with a butterknife.
a little extreme for me but if someone out there does it, i won't cry.

Gotcha... I guess in my particular situation these guys were only looking for spare change and passed on CD's, golf clubs and other fencable items in general. I also have an immobilizer so I wasn't too worried about the car being jacked. A determined thief is just going to tow your car away if he's a real pro...
I know a guy who in another building who now leaves his doors and windows unlocked, and keeps nothing of value inside. That way the do less damage to find nothing inside (he has a beat up 85 Cavalier though)
