Ethan Bear Responds to Racist abuse
This was first posted in the E=NG thread, and while there is a good deal of E=NG associated with this story, I think Bear's response was phenomenal.
He bravely stood in front of a camera and addressed the abuse with poise and class. I think most guys would have just made a statement (not there there is anything wrong with that).
For a young player to show this kind of maturity by doing a direct address video is impressive. Good for Ethan Bear and a very pleasant #### you to anyone who sent him racist messages.

He's a beauty.

I can’t stand the Oilers, but I’m always cheering for this guy. I hope he ends up in Seattle.

Man, that really sucks. He's just a young d-man getting his first two years in the lineup. For the most part, Bear actually is not bad on the blue line. Yeah, he made some mistakes and a costly one in the 4th game and got benched for it. It's not like he's the only one. Connor McDavid actually turned over the puck that pretty much ended the whole series. Sucks that racism has to come into this. It really does.

It's the dumbass Oilers who gave him too much responsibility right off the bat. Valimaki is a way better D-man than Bear, but they still shelter him.
Bear was just thrown to the wolves as a hyped up prospect, as is their way.
He obviously has character. If a real NHL team were to develop him, he could probably become a stable middle or bottom pair d-man.

A big FU to those who posted this crap. They're not hockey fans, they're d-bags, racists, and generally scum. Where they live or where they are from is irrelevant.
Bear has been a great ambassador and role model for indigenous people. Nice to see the Oilers and the NHL stand behind him and support him, at least with official statements.

The really sick thing is that these are fans of his own team, unlike what happened to Joel Ward several years back.

Just another reason Oilers fans suck. They have always been a spiteful fan base.

With respect CroFlames, this statement belongs in the E=NG thread if you feel the need to slag the team or assign blame/cause.

As a person of color myself who has endured countless acts of racism and microaggressions, I applaud Ethan Bear for stepping up and doing this in the spotlight rather than a basic written response on Twitter. Good for him.

Good for Ethan for speaking up about this. Being a black hockey fan growing up I’ve gotten racist stuff thrown my way both online and irl. It’s sad because hockey is a great sport and I want more black people and other POC to get into it.

Good for this kid for speaking up. Fans can be dicks (from all fanbases) but that's way over the top. Classless jackasses.
Hopefully he gets snagged by Seattle and can have a decent career not in the depths of the frozen hell known as Deadmonton. I still don't think he's a great defender, but he seems like a good kid and I hope is freed from having to deal with the "fans" of that franchise.

I was reading some of the Oilers facebook groups about this. So many people are decrying him playing the "race card" or that they want to see proof of these things before they believe him.
JFC, I know every franchise has them, but how do people not get that he's not trying to escape criticism of his play? You can criticize without racist attacks.

Sad, but not surprising racism against Indigenous peoples in Canada is very real and very common.

Good for Ethan for standing up to this, but I hope everyone feels like it is also their responsibility to stand up to it and call it out when they see it, even if it isn't directed at them. These people do what they do because they've lived in a hateful bubble that has made it ok. Burst the bubble.
