Maybe he can put some of his yacht lawsuit money into a new building.
I find it hard to take this guy's side on anything.

An arena in downtown Ottawa would put that city on another level. They have a lot of funky downtown areas, not having an arena is underutilization.

Taking a while to get to 5000

lmao the building is fine (by all accounts) the location is awful. So he wants to build brand new in the same location? I wish I could be that rich. I'd accept the stupid. Maybe.

Gatineau is really wild. It's just across a bridge from Ottawa but no one there speaks English

Gatineau makes a lot more sense geographically. It's closer to downtown Ottawa than Kanata.
The problem is that there is a Sens/Habs divide right along the river. For all the time I lived in Gatineau, almost everyone I met were Habs fans, so the gate sales would still be driven from the Ontario side.

An arena near the Casino du Lac-Leamy would make way more sense to me than in Kanata

Most the people I know my age (50s) in Ottawa are either Habs or Leafs fans. The Sens have not caught on that much.

IIRC (I lived in Ottawa in 1995-96) the Quebec side has bars open an hour or two later. I don't think rooting interest matters - the fans will cross the bridge. If they get concessions to build there I can fully see it.

Developers realized they didn't want anything to do with Melnyk, IIRC. The plan for the area is viable with or without an arena.

What kind of tax problems would that present, playing in Quebec?

I never appreciated the distance Kanata is to Oattawa.
I guess it would be like the Flames in Airdrie?
I wouldn't ever go to a game either, and I am inner city, let alone people in the deep south.

I imagine corporately, the team would have to pay Quebec taxes.
For players, you pay to the province where you live. I lived in Quebec and worked in Ontario, so I paid Quebec taxes.
And do not ever do this. It was a huge mistake. Although real estate is a bargain on the Quebec side, unless you are buying a home there, the taxes suck and are unnecessarily complicated.

Can the existing bridges handle the traffic on game nights? I'm thinking how busy the bridge in Kelowna is in the summer.
