Default Darryl Sutter sets a 'start date' for summer training

From this Gaudreau article on the flames website. Gaudreau says it is new for him and most of the guys

But first, a busy off-season awaits.

"I think for me most of the guys - and we've never really had this - but (Head Coach) Darryl (Sutter) gave us a set start date for training, and mine is June 14," Gaudreau said. "Normally I'd go home and take a couple weeks off, and figure out the best idea based on how the body is feeling.

"This year is a little different. I've got a few more weeks here, but I'll enjoy the time off and then get to it.

One of the things I loved about Hartley to. These guys need to always be the better conditioned team on the ice if they hope to out work other teams consistently and make up for a lack of high end talent.

I remember when the Flames were one of the best conditioned teams in the league (with Hartley IIRC). Later in the game the Flames would get stronger, would be nice to get that back.

I'm a bit confused, shouldn't Ryan Van Asten already have been doing something like this?

If the Flames had to participate in that triple OT Jets Oil elimination game they would have been passed out on the floor keeping that pace. What ever he's doing its not working.

Yeah I definitely feel like he should have seen what worked with Hartley and what didn't with others, at least enough to have an opinion.

But I suppose he still takes his cues from the head coach, who runs and designs the practices and has the final say in everything. Might have just gotten veto'ed.

But then you're telling me the coaches after Hartley didn't prioritize conditioning? What in the world ??!

Yea would be interesting to know if RVA has that kind of power or if he can only "suggest" what the players do.

I'm even a bit shocked that Darryl can mandate players when they should start training, I thought the CBA would have something to say about that.

No question this team has not had the same physical stamina and endurance as the Hartley teams.

This wouldn't fly in the NFL so as said above I'm curious if such a thing is allowed by the CBA. I supposed it could be classified as voluntary as I'm sure Darryl may have done this with the Kings or the Flames at least covered their bases here.

They should be well rested from the effort they put in this season. They should be thankful he didn’t say June 1st.

I would have hoped that the players wouldn't need someone to tell them they need to train. I'm guessing MacKinnon never needed that. And Gio for that matter.

Country club alive and well it seems.

Just hit the links a few times a week over the summer and lay off the darts at least a month before the season starts.

I doubt Ward even got a chance to do so, between getting hired late and the uncertainty of the start of the year. Team looked to be in good shape under Peters - conditioning wasn’t their issue IMO.

Gio is a look after myself and maybe the rest of the team will get the idea kind of leader.

How would he not be keeping in touch and making sure his teammates are putting what it takes to get ready? The teams and his success is dependent on them being in as good a condition as he is.

Iginla used to have team mates that wanted to train with him, likely before the Gary Roberts guys took over the off season training for the elites and guys that wanted to be conditioned like Iginla.

It's probably a different routine than Ryan Van Asten's.

- Wake up at 4. 2 cups of black coffee
- Milk the cows for 45 minutes - high intensity
- Test your leathered skin against the barbed wire for toughness. 2 hours
- Horse rasslin' - 1 hour
- Break in new Wranglers - 30 minutes. Sets of 6.
- Grumble at rocks. Ongoing throughout

Bobby Hull famously built up his forearms in hay baling season.

At some point do they chop wood, then proceed to carry water?
