Hard to believe I would have been 13 at the time, had a full and glorious mullet and watched the news that day as Mt St Helen's below her top in a thunderous eruption. It was one of the largest Eruptions in North America, and the effects were even seen here in Calgary as we saw pink skies and ash fall.
While the largest eruption of the 20th century still remains as Novarupta in Alaska, Mt St Helens was considered to be one of the more economically devastating eruptions.
Mt St Helens is stirring again as the current lava dome's in St Helen's point to a much larger eruption building that will spread Ash over 40,000 miles

I remember walking around my elementary school playground, weirded out by the grey, ashen skies. It was like the worst days of forest fire smoke a few years ago.
