Icon45 Leafs acquire Riley Nash from CBJ for a cond. 7th

Nash is injured and likely won't return until the playoffs. He's in the final year of his $2.75m AAV contract.

With his injury, I don't think Nash is much of a Ryan comparable.

Quote:
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has acquired forward Riley Nash from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a conditional seventh round selection in the 2022 NHL Draft. The seventh round selection will become a sixth round selection if Nash appears in 25 percent of the Maple Leafs' playoff games in 2021.

A dozen years ago the Leafs fans would have gone bonkers over getting Nash from Columbus...

If there is a market for Nash there is a market for everyone. Having said that, the returns are going to be disappointing.

Taylor Hall is going to look great on the Leafs second line with Tavares and Nylander

Leafs did this for cap. They can place Nash on LTIR and exceed the cap by more this way. Smart move by Dubas and crew,

I’ll take a pick over nothing, while opening up a spot for a Stockton player to get some time.

Maybe someone can explain this to me. They trade for a guy with a 2.75 million dollar cap hit who is eligible for LTIR. No contract went the other way, so their cap situation is almost exactly the same except they get an extra body who can come back in the playoffs free of charge.

Why are Leafs fans acting like 1) Kyle Dubas is a genius (pretty standard and non impactful move imo) 2) that this trade somehow gives them enough cap space to get Hall?

Am I missing something here?
