I mean make up calls have always been part of the NHL and hockey in general, are we really surprised?

Not surprising. But there is big money in gambling now and nhl takes a cut of that. You can’t have the integrity of the game come into play. It’s one thing for bias to happen because they are human. It’s another to actually say it.

It probably was. But to me the issue is that refs are looking to call penalties on specific teams to manage games. We all know it happens and it’s crap.

Call the penalties regardless of what’s happened in the game. If one team takes 10 penalties and the other team takes none then too bad.

The league is so predictable. If you have a 1 goal lead you can guarantee you’re taking a penalty with 6 or 7 minutes left. Refereeing should be about protecting the players, not keeping games close.

End of the day the league exists to make money by providing entertainment.

Close games are more entertaining.

It sucks but it’s the nature of the beast

NHL games are actively managed. We all know that.

Yup. Same reason why we’ll never see the three point system for the standings. The league loves the parity.

Obviously, the buzz around this isn't because this is brand new speculation. It's the fact that this was caught on a hot mic of a ref actually talking about it.

Life was good pre-Wideman's hit.

There was so much hope.

The game in question was only 1-0. The real question for me is why did he want to "get a ####ing penalty against Nashville early"?
I hope this leads to more transparency by Refs.

Here's a link to the actual call.

Yeah everyone knows it happens but this is the first time we have recorded evidence. I assume this will go away but part of me hopes that it would spark some change in the way NHL games are officiated. I just hate it when a team does all the right things to win and end up being penalized because the officials are trying to keep the game close.

He has to give Red Wings and early chance to tie it up or it may be too late later. Nashville might score again.

It's really dumb. Play even strength, work hard to take the lead, get penalized for it
