I don't recommend watching the final slow-motion replay to anyone who considers themselves squeamish.
Just a terrible blow for Stockton, which was already without Emilio Pettersen (day-to-day) in the top-six.
Pospisil missed a ton of time last year after being knocked out in a fight with the late Colby Cave. He was off to a great start this season, with 11 points in 13 games.
Veilleux has been suspended once already this season for directing an obscene gesture towards the Toronto Marlies' bench. He also once received a match penalty in the QMJHL for kicking somebody during a fight.

Sadly, plays like this will continue to happen in the game until organizations take it upon themselves to police these actions. Why not stand up and say “This type of play has no place in the game, and doesn’t reflect our organization’s standards. As such, we have terminated the contract of Player X with immediate effect.”
Suspensions seem fairly meaningless. But get on the same page to say, this sort of garbage is a one-way ticket out of hockey might actually do something...
Sorry, I know it’s a pipe dream. I’m taking myself to the quiet room as I’ve apparently suffered some sort of head injury today.

Or should be suspended for the amount of time that the player they injured is out. Eye for an eye.

What's the science behind why in these types of collisions, the hitter is often fine while the receiver encounters injury? Does it center around the receiver not being prepared for it?

I would think so yeah. If you’re purposefully kneeing someone you probably have your knee bent and are rigid prepared for the impact. If your leg isn’t braces to be struck it will hyperextend back.
When you see these collisions accidentally, I feel like it’s relatively often that A) neither are hurt or B) both are.
