Can anyone give some advice on what the approximate cost should be to replace an inducer motor and heat exchanger on a furnace? We recently had to have this done (no heat). We were quoted $3,300 labour (plus parts) to do the work - when the tech came out to do it only took him about 2 hours and 45 minutes to do the work. This works out to about $1,200/hour for labour so I know we got screwed, but I'm wondering how badly. What is the usual charge for this work?

Not quite the same, but we had our inducer motor and blower motor replaced a couple months ago. Cost was around $1600 total - 1250 in parts, 350 in labor. I'm really happy with my furnace guy, he's proven to be very capable and honest.

You can try sending an email but I am sure with this cold snap he is also crazy busy.
I have had my heat exchanger on my 2000 model year Bryant furnace back in 18??. If I recall correctly, the labour component was $700. It was a 5-6/7 hour job. It's a big job from what I know from speaking with multiple heating experts, ATCO Gas inspectors more.
Heat exchangers are not cheap and have gone up in costs significantly in recent years.
Sorry about the bad luck and the costs. It's just such an awful feeling but know you did the right thing in getting it fixed. Far too often people will mess around with heat and with the cold snap, frozen and busted pipes are can be a disaster.

Since they don't build things any good anymore it'll happen again, next time remember youtube is your friend. With only basic tools it to me about 3 lazy hours to replace my exchanger that cost me a little over $800.00
You can search any furnace and it'll likely come up.

Thanks for the responses - this furnace was actually replaced by the same company in 2012 and the heat exchanger had a lifetime warranty on the part. That is probably why they hammer you on the labour charge. They really have you over a barrel when the furnace is out and you can't shop around or DIY like with a regular home repair. In this case, the furnace is also at a rental property with a family, so I didn't feel like I could be screwing around trying to figure out the issue myself or getting multiple quotes over days.
I did call the company (it's one of the larger, well known ones) to inquire about what definitely looks like a rip off. I wanted to give them the opportunity to be reasonable and keep a customer, but was basically told to eff myself. According to them, the labour charge also takes into account preparing things before they arrive, the fact they can respond quickly and their guarantee.
I am considering a complaint under consumer protection legislation or maybe even a call to CBC's "Go Public" that likes to do pieces on business that engage in this type of predatory behaviour. I feel like I should be armed with some idea of normal charges for this work before I do that though.

Sounds like you should share the name of this company.
Did you have them working on a stat holiday, the weekend or after 6pm?
And... you're kind of too late if the work is already done. You're just going to create personal stress and risk getting a lien slapped on your property if you keep going down this path, IMO.
