Default Dryden: Goalies are too big

Interesting article from the Atlantic of all place.

Ken Dryden thinks goalies are too big, and it warps the game. Some really compelling points. Link:

Sure, when Calgary finally gets a good big goalie (Smith doesn’t count).

I thought they already made the pads smaller, that’s why save percentages are so much lower than they were 10 years ago.

Cant do much about most goalies being tall.

The gear is too big, not the goalies boomer.

1000%. The nets have stayed the same size and so has the sheet of ice, but the goaltenders and players are all considerably bigger and faster than previous eras. So there’s just no time or space to make plays or be creative, the game has become “who can turn the puck over the least?”

They need to definitively figure out what is for safety and protection, and what is for artificially covering the net.

I would love to see goalie pads geared back some more.

I love Duhatschek but he’s been clamouring for this silly rule change for as long as I can remember. They always seem to pop up in weeks where I’m finding 6-5 and 7-3 scores.
The nets are fine. To be honest I don’t understand the lack of scoring arguments at all. Teams are putting up 3+ a night, often. Take a look at all the scores over the last week. What was there, 2 x 1-0 games? Wasn’t Dryden 6’4”?

But yeah the gear is a huge advantage. And needs to continue to be corrected.

They should just go to nets that are 125 cm by 185 cm and get on metric.

No to changing the nets.

Yes to a re-design of goalie gear top to bottom.

There might be goals being scored at a reasonable rate now, but the issue is what kinds of goals are being scored. We rarely see breakaways or "nice goals" because there isn't much room and the game is overcoached.

That would be interesting. He always seemed huge to me. 6'4", 210 lbs.

He’s right - goalie pads are 11” wide.

That’s just under the width of a standard ruler per leg.

The pads could be another 2” narrower and protect guys just fine.

I do appreciate these composite sticks give everyone a missile for a shot, and I’m all for some allowances on the chest pad front to ensure we don’t have $50M worth of starting goalies on IR with collarbone issues every year.

Gloves and blockers are fine.

As I told my ex, “fix the legs and chest and I’m happy.”
