Not good enough for the 5th place team in the division, but good enough for the front runners. Could have had him for free. Frustrating.

I don't think the Flames have the cap space, do they?

The only really frustrating thing here is Galchenyuk's play over his last 67 games. I don't think the Flames really missed out on too much.

Kind of strange that Toronto didn't just claim him. Sending those 2 players doesn't save them any cap space as neither is in the NHL at the moment. They have less cap space than us, but maybe their LTIRs are out longer.

I guess dumping the AHL contract saves them a bit of real money and they go from 47 contracts to 46, which gives them some more wiggle room for future moves.

Korshkov actually has decent potential if he decides to come back to North America.

Even at his salary a lot of teams needed to shed salary to take him.

I’d have given him a shot but on the other hand, he’s the kind of player that people here hate.

Mike Sillinger was 100x the player Alex Galchenyuk is or ever will be.

I loved that guy’s travelling road show of a career. Everybody wanted him, but not for more than 18 months at a time.

Flames have a little more than $300k in cap space, plus Ryan on LTIR. If Galchenyuk replaced Froese, Nordtrom, Robinson, or Simon, it would put us right at the cap with no wiggle room once Ryan returned.

The Leafs only have $46k in cap space, but multiple players on LTIR, so it's likely they won't have to worry about the cap implications for a while.

They will have problems when Campbell and Simmonds come back from IR.

No, cause now they know they can put him on the taxi squad without waiving him to do so and they got rid of some unwanted contracts and actual cash salary in the process.

Flames used up their cap friendly attempts at improving the forwards by signing gems like Simon, leivo, Nordstrom...

Yeah, it was tight and they would have had to waive someone themselves. Toronto got him for two minor league players (24 year old in Russia with 1 NHL game under his belt and a 30 year old AHL defenseman who hasn't had a sniff of a NHL area since 2017) so it was minor cap dump for cap dump.

Hot take Scorp. Might want to compare him to some of the talent on the Flames. I mean, if you're going to put him down for only putting up 24 points last season, then maybe we could apply that same brush to someone who put up half that in similar time? This team needs another player with ability to make a pass and convert chances. Galchenyuk would have been an improvement over multiple players on our current roster.

...I’m not going to disagree with NewEra, but with that said - Galchenyuk sucks and has been kicked around the league for years. I’d still easily take him ahead of Leivo, Simon, or Nordstrom.

I’m guessing he hadn’t left Canada, so he can play for Toronto in a week?

There are a lot of assumptions in this post and ultimately I'm really not convinced that he's worth using up a roster spot and cap space on.

Leivo is a lot better, IMO, and they're barely using him as is.

So because the flames have some under performers, we can’t be critical of under performers on other teams? Ok then lol
