Default Oilers 5 Flames 2

Oilers 5 Flames 2

- Flames come out flat as a freeway and pay for it
- Markstrom valiant in defeat
- Did the Flames hit double digits in completed passes on the night?
- Middle six and top two pairings decent, top line, fourth line and bottom pairing caved in.

So, since the r-word is a no-no in flames land, what panic garbage trade will we see in the coming weeks???
Think Conroy is dumb enough to move our 1st?? Would he have a choice???

We'll trade Mangi for Greenway for truculence or whatever they want to call it now.

19-4 High Danger chances for the no goods matched the eye test. Flames showed up to play a leisurely outdoor game and the no goods took it to them.

Flames showed up dressed for an audition on Hee-Haw and pretty much played like it.

At least they won the battle of on ice uniforms handily.

Solid for UFA decision making though!
The team is showing that it is not the coach that was the bigger issue to them not winning.

Best way that I heard it described is that the Flames are like a bunch of puzzle pieces from different boxes. They just do not seem to fit together.

Going forward there are only a few things to do:

1. Stop all progress on pending UFA signings because non of them are showing to be difference makers in helping the team win games.

2. Put the pending UFA players in situations to highlight their abilities and wait until January and shop and sell them all.

3. Start looking around the league for other opportunities to start moving players like Mangiapane for younger and cheaper contracts.

Agree that the bottom pairing had a rough night but I think Solovyov looks like an NHLer. A little time and could be a solid middle pairing guy.

Yeah I'd agree with that.

I think he makes the right play more often than not.

Lost his man a few times in front of the net last night.

He did, but he wasn't alone in that.

The problem, IMO (with respect to THIS problem), is that the Flames are standing still in their defensive positions, and then hesitant in how to react, then uncertain on what to do when the DO get the puck, and as a result, cough it up WAY too much in their own zone, and thus are spending way too long in their own zone. If you keep doing that, coverage will eventually break down and guys will be left open.

IMO< this has been the biggest problem over the last few games: defensive zone turnovers, resulting in long stretches where the play remains in their end. Multiple goals have come as a result.

Part of me wonders if Zadorov is on to something.

You have 2 of your top pieces in Lindholm and Hanifin not even sure if they want to be here. That's gotta mess with the juju of an already fragile team.

Listless and boring is the best way to describe this team. Just a complete lack of a pulse for this group. As others have alluded to, I wonder if there's somes systems stuff that is partially to blame. They're all too worried about where they should be, rather than just play hockey.

I thought the winger lost the defenseman, who scored the 1st goal.

Flames defenseman had the correct player.

That's fair.

And on ice events aren't always one particular players fault.

But when you're on the ice for zero high danger chances for and eight against it can't be a good sign.

The old NHL app had a game flow chart, its was habdy to see how the ice was tilted throughout the game. Not on the new one.

Flames laid an egg because Markstrom’s pads looked like bacon

When I saw those, it reminded me of a guy who once said “He’s going to be a beast. Mark my words”

I still think it's doubtful that they have a work ethic issue (though the Blues game tested that).

I just don't think they have the mental strength or confidence to play to their abilities.

The worst situation would have been a team that was in the mushy middle because they could have resigned players and tried to remain competitive without ever having much of a chance to actually do some damage.

The best situation is that the coach was the issue and the team goes on a significant run to start the season and everyone is happy (I like the team winning). I still think that they have time to turn it around, but that window is closing very, very quickly.

The next best situation is that the team is one of the worst in the league forcing management to stop all contract negotiations and trade off everyone that they can by the deadline or sooner. They have their veteran contracts that keep them around the cap floor and they just continue to rebuild the talent pool.

Seems like we are veering towards a pretty good outcome for the long term future of the franchise, as much as this season will be disappointing. At least, we can see some different lines and pairings once the team is really out of it and some trades start to happen.

We’re far enough into the season. It’s not systems. It’s a lack of leadership and not enough players that hate losing
