Pretty sure thats an indication they want to try Lindhom/Tkachuk as a pair to see what the have. Leivo will likely see some time on the right side of those two as well.

Ya I was thinking pairs as well - probably keep Money and Johnny together too maybe try them with Simon then? Not sure who they would go with..

Interesting, so Team Iginla includes:
-Mikael Backlund, Sam Bennett, Dillon Dube, Milan Lucic, Andrew Mangiapane, Derek Ryan and
-Mark Giordano and Chris Tanev.

And Team McDonald includes:
-Johnny Gaudreau, Josh Leivo, Elias Lindholm, Matthew Tkachuk, Dominik Simon, Joakim Nordstrom, Sean Monahan and
-Noah Hanifin, Rasmus Andersson, Nikita Nesterov, Jusso Valimaki.

Based on these lines, we know that Lindholm and Monahan will be at centre. We also know that Gio and Tanev will be a pair, and I predict Hanifin and Andersson and Valimaki and Nesterov will also be pairs.

I wonder if Backlund, Ryan and Mangiapane will be a line used for shutdown purposes, while Lindholm, Chucky and Leivo can do that but also put more offence up, and Johnny and Money play a mostly offensive game focused on PP and 3rd line for 5v5 (with lots of offensive starts). Lots to think about

Gaudreau and Monahan will not be skating 3rd line ice time.

This club will be as good as they are this season....nothing has really changed in that area.

5v5 they will be at or near the top of ice time every night.

I do like the idea of Mangiapane and Bennett together but I would rather it be as such:

Sorry I should have clarified. They would be slightly less 5v5 than the other two lines but get most of the pp time, giving them the top minutes overall still and better offensive opportunities not playing against the top lines of the other team

It’s more the responsibilities and coverage of the position. Iggy used to take face offs often but nobody was confusing his game with that of a C

My ideal lines based on these practice groups would be:

Tkachuk - Lindholm - Simon (#1 line...play them anywhere)
Gaudreau - Monahan - Leivo (lots of O zone starts)
Lucic - Backlund - Ryan (lots of D zone starts)
Mangiapane - Bennett - Dube (lots of O zone starts)

Will be interesting to see how the line combos continue to evolve. I am going to assume that Backlund is retained as the defensive centre on this team, as Lindholm wasn't as effective in that spot when Backlund went to wing.


I really thought that Gaudreau-Monahan were going to be broken up as well. Hopefully they can get whatever new pairings ironed-out and get some chemistry developed before the season starts.
