Odd...but a good play
...doesn't matter to me...I'm neither a high calibre student, a minority, or from a single parent home, so I've got student line of credit! WoooHooo!

So out of a $9 Billion Surplus, we offer $621,625 to the rest of Canada to appease them.

I am all for giving out some money and sharing the wealth with the rest of Canada, but the second anyone thumbs their nose asking for more is precisely when it should be kicked in.
It's like those losers who ask for a smoke and when you give them one they ask for three more.

It seems like an empty gesture to me. They are basically paying for one semester's tuition for 325 people across the country.
$12 Million over 20 Years...if you assume that global oil prices will remain at the same level (likely they will go up) over the next 20 years with increasing middle east instability and the astronomical growing needs for oil in Russia and China...
That's $12,000,000 out of $180,000,000,000
A percentage so small I can't even calculate it
As an Albertan, I don't want the rest of Canada to get our money, but as a student, the matter of tuition and the fact that it is so high and that governements (any level) aren't helping to contribute more really irks me.

Actually, we already pay for the vast majority of cost for all the students in Alberta, and through the billions sent to Ottawa a not-insignificant bit of the cost of many other students' tuition across the country. So it's helping an additional 325 people even more.
And it's not 600,000 - it's 20 million. 20 million of our dollars today so that thousands of students across the country can benefit in perpetuity. Not that anyone will care.

I don't think that is necessarily a good assumption.
Reasons why:
1) Recent announcements of over $12 Billion in the oil sands will raise Canada's oil output to 3.6 MM Bbls of oil/day (more than a few of the OPEC countires) high oil prices right now will lead to increased production capacity and lower prices in the future.
2) Oil reserves in Russia have been historically under developed, and as of right many companies/contries are in no rush to get involved simply because a) the prize is so huge there isn't a major advantage to getting in early, and b) it's freakin Rusia, untill they clean up their act why would you want to invest there. As oil demand rises, look for both of these to change.
3) Anyone who was around in the 80's and even some of us who weren't will know that what you said should sound familliar and a little scary.

To me, this should only happen if these scholarships are only valid for Alberta institutions... attract the best and brightest here, not pay for them to go to McGill or Queens and have our Universities dragged through the mud for no good reason.

Does 10-11 billion dollars in equalization payments PER YEAR mean absolutely **** all to you?
That is an excellent point Thunderball.

It apparentely doesn't mean anything to Easterners who convieniently forget this when they read about Alberta in the papers. (I'm sorry, Central Canadians) whom I've seen on various boards demanding a full sharing and transfer of oil wealth. Even people who want pseudo-NEP back.

just a few things:
First of all
On behalf of Nova Socitans: Thank you Alberta for the kind gesture, I like the $2,005 scholarship in honour of your 100th year in the country. Maybe I'm the first to notice that it's $2,005 of extra money of Canadian students because the year is 2005?
Secondly
On behalf of myself: F%^&* YOU Alberta for coming out with this plan in my final year of schooling
Thridly
There is only one school in this country that actually takes the MacLean's rankings seriously: St FX. Every other school knows it's a joke, hell I think it was McGill that was ranked #1 the first year MacLean's did the rankings, and their president came out and said "wow, that's great, but if you really look at what they've done, it's insane to compare schools like that" (paraphrased not exact quote) so they divided it up into three sections which still is still insane as you can't get a true picture of the universities nor the schools in them.
For my Fourth point:
Do you know why Alberta shouldn't put all this faith in oil, and oil prices rising? The Oilers! They suck, you don't want to base your economy on an Edmonton based sports team

This just upsets me.
This pi$$es me off to no end. This does nothing to appease anyone, if anything it will make them more jealouse and self loathed. Much like the elections - there will never be a middle ground with people who are dilisional as this:
(1) Believe that the gun registry will curb gan violence and stop mass murders.
(2) Believe in draft doding (this might just be BC but it still ticks me off)
(3) Believe that AIDS is not a 100% preventable disease.
As a proud Albertan and tax payer why not use that for a Ctrain leg to the airport or a Edmonton transit leg to West Ed. This is again a waste of taxpayer money and we will once again have nothing to show for it.
The least they could do is require people who get the scholarship to write an essay about Alberta.
Geesh - what a joke.

Maybe I need one of them fancy scholarships to straighten out my book learnin', but I can't for the life of me figure out what you are trying to say.
What do the gun registry, draft dodging and AIDS have to do with anything?
