Default Glenbow Museum

I searched for a thread but looks like there's never been one here, apart from the odd news story.

They're undergoing renovations and so a number of long running exhibitions are shutting down (to be possibly re-exhibited in the future in a different format, or possibly never again I guess) Thought I'd give everyone a heads up (since I just stumbled across it myself) that they'll be holding a free week from Nov 14-22 - https://www.glenbow.org/exhibitions/all-access-week/

The one I'll miss the most is the Treasures of the Mineral World which has been running since 1976! Love going up there and seeing the weird rock formations.

The West African exhibition and the warfare one (both open since 1994) are going too, but I never really loved those. Good for a browse here and there.
Also going away are the two Indigenous ones and the Mavericks exhibition.

My favourite exhibition (The Art of Asia) unfortunately already disappeared a number of years ago. I'm hoping any new exhibits next year can reincorporate some of that stuff and maybe some pre-20th Century European art. That would be really cool.

By the way, as of up to summer 2020, here's what we're getting for the new Glenbow:

https://curiocity.com/calgary/lifest...seum-revamped/

https://www.glenbow.org/join-give/campaign/

Spoiler!

I don't hate the concept, but the already enclosed, cold feeling of the current Glenbow exterior should have been given a new chapter and opened up and integrated with more natural light and visually into the surrounding urban fabric. Dialog and the Glenbow really missed the mark here, IMO. I hope the exterior design is updated to something more transparent and vibrant - the next stage of its design journey began earlier this summer.

Havent been there in years, but my boyhood memory that sticks with me was all the cool knights armor they had on display back then. I seem to recall some scary looking native american looking figures mixed in there as well. Is that stuff still all there?

Is the Jeff Koons Balloon Dog part of it or just thrown in there for concept purposes?

That would be the warfare exhibit (the knight's armour at least) which is one of the ones going away.

Awful presumptuous of them thinking they'll be getting a $58 million Koons.

I think it looks pretty good. Materials will make or break it for sure. Regardless, anything is better than what it looks like now. Like how they are opening it up at street level with more windows and a two storey entrance. Should look sharp and a massive improvement over what it currently is.

Would love some of the old artifacts to make their way into some new cool exhibits. Hopefully they can finally lure some big name travelling exhibits as well.

Hang on a sec... I found a better picture of the entire exterior....

That ground floor rendering makes it look like the ground floor lobby of any office tower in Calgary....

I won't pass judgement until I see it in person. I hated the Chinese finger trap when it was first drawn, but like it now.
