Default Uniform Flair/Intricacy/Weirdness

Slightly inspired by Scorp's uniform thread, which was great, I wanted to start a thread about some interesting uniform details. What I mean by that is little things that players do differently with their uniforms, not details about quirks that are part of the whole team's look. I guess if there are interesting things like the Vegas white gloves or the California Golden Seals white skates those can be brought in, but I am mostly thinking of unique player style.

Here are a few examples:

Ovechkin's elbow pad coverings.
Ovi has kind of sheath things so that he doesn't just expose his elbow pads like he used to. He has a lot of uniform idiosyncrasies, but this might be the most unique.

NSFW!

Kelly Hrudey's blue headband.
As a kid I always thought it was so weird that his ninja-style headband did not in any way match the team colours.

I went to the Flames game in LA when the Kings honoured him and they gave away replica blue headbands. I still have mine in storage, but here's a pic of Johnny rocking one.
NSFW!

Phil Housley Stick
When I was a kid my dad ended up with a Phil Housley game stick that he gave to me. Housley shaved down the top of the stick so that it sort of tapered to the know, presumable for a bit more control stick-handling and such. It is hard to tell but if you zoom in on this photo you can see just before the tape that the stick isn't squared off as a piece has been shaved away. Sticks are probably the most fertile ground for this kind of thing, but I am not sure if Housley's is widely known or if there are any other players that do something similar.

Also take note of the patch Ovi wears on his chest protector in honour of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.

I remember having a Danny Lawson game stick from the Calgary Cowboys and he did the same thing Housley did with stick. I suspect he and other players did it to make the end easier to grip. In fact I did the same thing with my sticks when I was playing in a ball hockey league.

Ovi said that he wears that shaded visor, and uses bright yellow laces cuz he was a fan of Theo Fleury when he was young....

I was always distracted by Dion's green stick...

Bobby Orr was famous for having s single strip of tape on the blade of his wooden sticks. He was not a fan of tape and liked how the puck felt on the blade of his stick. Later he went to no tape.

He also played with no socks in his skates as he liked how his bare feet felt in his skates.

Phil Esposito used to put baby powder on the tape of his sticks to prevent water build up on the blade.

This was pretty well known 30 years ago, but I don't know if people still know this.

When he was a kid, Gretzky often played on teams full of players who were a couple years older than he was. The jerseys were made for the older kids, so Gretzky's jerseys were often massively oversized on his slight frame. As a result, he got into the habit of tucking his jersey into his pants.

As he got older and turned pro, he continued to tuck in his jersey on the right side. This presented a problem for CCM and other jersey manufacturers because they placed their logo on the lower right part of the jersey. To overcome this problem, CCM would add a second logo to the lower left side of all of Gretzky's jerseys, just so people could see the logo while his jersey was tucked in.

Not hockey-related, but I find it cool that the former Hungary national soccer team goalkeeper ALWAYS wear grey sweatpants in matches:

And he wore those sweatpants at Euro 2016, one of the widest reaching sporting events in the world, in terms of global fan interest.

How many kids did Orr have?

There's a story in Stephen Brunt's book about Orr about how Boston-area strippers would refer to a certain, ahem, "hairstyle" as a "Bobby Orr" ...

Does Edmonton have a soccer team and need a goalie?

I believe that Hrudey said his headbands were just cut up strips of light blue underwear (like the ones Gretzky always wore under his jersey).

Can’t find a photo of it, but Pat Ribble had this weird hook taped at the butt end of his stick.

I think it was more popular among NYC taxi drivers in the late '70s.

How did a thread about uniforms and equipment devolve into people posting about women grooming their pubic hair?
