Wow, Columbus is really cleaning house.
Murray hasn't panned out exactly as hoped but he's still a good top-4 guy.

The Jackets have lots of D.
Werenski, Jones, Savard and Gavrikov are there top 4, they can afford to trade Murray and save the money and cap space by icing a cheaper, younger bottom pairing.

This is a good price for Jersey, if they sell Murray at the deadline they probably get more than that
Chris Johnston @reporterchris
New Jersey is sending a draft pick back in return.

Murray certainly hasn't lived up to his draft position, but he's still a second pairing guy, isn't he?? 5th round pick sounds incredibly cheap

Huh, I thought Murray was more valuable than that.
I mean, the Sens traded a 5th for Gudbranson.

No salary retained. NJ picks up full tab. Jackets clearing out more cap space.

I am surprised that all it took was a 5th.

#CBJ has cleared $11.8 million in cap space today with the buyout of Wennberg ($4.5M net), trade of Nutivaara ($2.7M), and trade of Murray (#4.6M).

That is ridiculously cheap for a 27 year old top 4 Dman.
This is going to be one weird off season. Wow.
A guy like that goes for a late 1st or two 2nds at a minimum at the deadline usually.

I don't think Murray is a top 4 defenceman. He virtually hasn't progressed since his rookie year. Hasn't had a + ESCF% season for over 5 years. He's a bottom pairing guy who isn't great at defending or scoring.

i disagree ashasx, Murray has logged 20 minutes for CBJ for quite a while and is reasonably effective (if unspectacular) in those minutes

Not a lot of big offensive UFA on the market to need the cap room for. I can see them going after Hall and Toffoli. Maybe they’re looking at a trade or do they surprise everyone and go after Pietrangelo too?

Their d-core is pretty deep. They still have their top 4 intact with Jones, Werenski, Savard and Gavrikov; the latter being a RFA due for a pretty big raise. Then this past season Kukan, Peeke & Harrington were just as close to regulars as Murray and Nutivaara. I would guess this money is going to be used to pay Gavrikov.
