icon53 Does anyone want to chat about jersey design?

Hey everyone!

I often find myself doodling what I think a perfect league (leagues...) would look like as the only real way to take a break from everything. So I'm 'wondering out loud' if this kind of content is a welcome distraction these days.. in lieu of of the classic on-ice distraction?

The first idea will give everyone an idea of where my head's at these days! But if everyone's down with it, I have a couple Flames and not-Flames concepts that I'm curious about CP thoughts on until hockey's really back.

A few things:
Why not the thread?
For starters: Mission Accomplished. I didn't want to hijack a thread that represents a different era in Flames jerseys. Now that our primaries are quality designs worth buying, we are a team that gets to try things on a 3rd jersey. I like to think that he really did read . On a personal note, I want to thank everyone involved and the great C&C I received in that thread over the years. That has always been a part of the good-vibes that I have reflected on. So thank you to everyone in there that enjoyed the creative part to fandom and athletics. *steps off soapbox*

Why Fire on Ice?
Funny enough, where I'd post this is a great place for conversation about what we need to be focusing on right now. Fire on Ice is where we would come to take a breath and distract our minds... but no with no one playing... maybe content here helps that a bit?

But if anyone's interested feel free to share your own stuff! All I ask from everyone is that we keep it constructive and fun. You're welcome to PM me if you have some non-constructive feedback you need me to hear. But I'd hate to encourage anyone to share something that steers them away from enjoying this.

That said... here's one that'll split a crowd!!
Day after day we are seeing massive beacons of hope amidst the (literal) smoke. In painting 'Black Lives Matter' right to the White House, an image that stuck with me was yellow-on-black DC flag painted on the street. Something about the protests weathering the storm for a few days to emerge powerful and loud has stuck with me. So I started sketching what a tribute to this in DC would look like

So Black Lives Matter in DC. In the same concept there's a few different directions still you could go. What do y'all think?

The one thing I might change about those BLM jerseys would be to put a small white outline around the yellow stripes.

The shoulders definitely need to be black, the white doesn't work for me at all.

I like 'em. Not a big fan of the three stars above the crest maybe. The logo is great.

Would the impact be better if the fist was not white?

See, I think the white fist in the middle jersey is the strongest pure design element on any of the jerseys... but in terms of a symbol, it's almost contradictory. I wonder if it might be better as yellow with white accents in there somewhere.

Awesome! Way more positive than I thought off the bat.

I didn't really intro the idea too much as I thought it would be mindless drivel but a lot of what I should have mentioned came up!

So the concept I gave myself was Black Lives Matter: Washington DC edition
So the palette I interpreted for BLM would be black/yellow with white accents, and I mixed in some Capitals style along with heavy use of the DC flag in striping

We share the same mindset! I experimented with bringing some white in with the stars etc - but staying true to the DC flag AND the BLM style calls for a strong white-black contrast

Always controversial! This and the white-shoulder option are something I pulled from a few Capitals looks

It looked inverted to me with white still in use (for the outline in this case), but I added a 2-colour version of the jersey if you dig that!

Edit: Just saw the links you shared. Out of habit that was the first thing I checked too! As black apparel is the best avenue, a strong white fist is the use for BLM too. In a literal way it is a bit counter, but aesthetically I'm glad they don't insist on white outlines-black fist or that kinda thing.

Same! I wasn't sure if that was the right message so I toy with the round-crest example to try and avoid police/military vibes. But then I look at some of the BLM gear and it's targeting exactly that kinda vibe. So it would actually be a really fun style to dive into as BLM+Washington+Hockey is a lot to unpack.

And maybe! I love that KK jersey thread so anything close to that will be fun

That being said, here's a few adjustments from what C&C - let me know what you think!

I'm not design expert, but what if you took the middle option at the top, and then instead of having the whole hand white, just do the outline of the hand white, leaving the hand black and joining the jersey?

Yeah I agree about the note that having the Black Lives Matter logo be a white fist seems odd.

I like the inclusion of a 3rd colour, but maybe simply inverting the logo like this while keeping the 3 colours:

That second jersey AC posted is really sharp. I'd buy one.

I don't get the stars, and why is the star that's front and center a white star? Could it somehow be a different black? Not sure how you'd be make black on black work, maybe just the one coloured star?

Just when I thought I actually had free-time to re-human myself I got swamped! Sorry for letting this thread die just after I started it.

But I've been looking forward to dropping this idea on you guys! It's clearly inspired by a few jerseys in this style, but I don't recall this being applied to NHL jerseys?

When I saw Klanny post about the great mountains of Edmonton, my first thought was this concept I had kicking around. Listening to fans rejection of the Cowboy theme, I've been looking to integrate the mountains into a Flames motif for a while. The 2014 alternate lives a new life in better colours as the first Flames reference to our nearby amazing scenery

What do we think of these for a Flames 3rd?

Not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the creativity of these. I’m a firm believer that as long as we go retro home and retro road then they can go crazy with the thirds and try something that is unique and “out there”

I would still prefer a black blasty jersey though for a third.

I like those, I find them interesting and different than your usual run of the mill hockey jersey. It's always puzzled me why we can't come up with some killer jerseys since our theme is fire based - shouldn't that be easy? Flames make everything cooler after all - they're painted on planes, automobiles all sorts of things so why can't we come up with a few cool jerseys.

Blasty's next! But black is not...

And you and me both
I think once a team establishes a good brand + apparel fans can buy and enjoy for years... it's time to have fun with it.

Ideally, I'd love to see the NHL give us 4 jerseys (I believe they are actually?)
Home: Perfect 100% amazing reds
Away: Perfect 150% amazing white I'm still blown away at how great those look

Heritage: Teams are allowed to bring an old look back with minor tweaks
Alternate: Teams are allowed an alternate jersey for home use

Thanks!

It's funny with the flames actually. I totally agree that you'd think that there should be limitless awesome designs... but actually using FLAMES on the jersey is really tough to not come off as tacky. Everything I have tried so far comes off WalMart/eBay... or barbed wire arm tattoos if too subtle

It is a goal though. Someday I'll put actual flames on the jersey

But the palette, amazing logo, cowboy theme (sorry everyone), mountains, and fire is a lot better to have than... pylons and oil!
