Default 24/7 Drinking in Jolly Ole England

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main...24/ixportaltop

More than 1,000 premises will have the right to serve alcohol 24 hours a day, according to the latest Government figures.

I actually think this is a good idea as it would keep people from drinking towards the finish line that is last call.

Their "traditional" closing time is 11 PM? I never knew that.

And HOZ, that quote is a bit out of context... at least according to this...

Government figures reveal that while around 1,000 premises have applied for the full 24-hour opening permit, the vast majority have asked for just an extra hour or two.

I think it's a good idea too. Everytime I've gone to London, I've found it strage to leave the pubs at 11 and not know what to do. This should keep drunk people from all spilling onto the streets at the same time and give people something to do instead of causing trouble.

not sure i understand your logic. The 'something' it will give them to do, is sit in the pubs and drink more??

That's exactly it. Their reasoning is that instead of having a 'last call' where everyone rushes to drink more before it's over, they won't ever have one, avoiding that rush.. also, they won't kick everyone out at the same time, which often causes issues on the streets outside the bar. If everyone knows they can drink at whatever pace they want, and then leave whenever they feel like it, there won't be so many people rushing to get hammered and then getting into fights with everyone else who all had to rush to get hammered and had to leave at the same time.

Did I hear right on the news that they say 1 in 5 English men drink to excess on a Friday or Saturday night, and 1 in 3 women do the same. I've met a lot of English girls in my day who liked to drink much moreso than the ladies from our side of the ocean...But to drink more than men, could that be right?

in some parts of this god forsaken land, the bearded women come out of their caves and can outdrink even the most hardened lush.
We call them northerners :P

yes its true, some women here have the main aim of getting very drunk, not just merry drunk but absolutely plastered so some ugly bloke will take them home and make monkey love to them. they are also the girls who get pregnant at 14 just so they can get a free house from the government.
on the other hand, you get lots of great chicks who drink a hell of a lot but know how to have a great time, if you ever go to Newcastle you will know what i mean, the girls there are just crazy!

I prefer the Calgary girls though, they are just amazing!

The 24 hour drinking thing is somewhat of a misconception. You have to apply for a licence to stay open later. Most pubs have applied for and extra hour or maybe 2 just on friday and saturday. Only 0.5% of all the pubs in England and Wales have applied for 24 hour licences and only 1/4 of them were accepted. The sad thing is all the pubs near me have been rejected for late licences apart from one and it is a dive! I usually go to bars and clubs anyway which are open till very late so it will not affect me. It sucks that in Caltown all the bars close so early. Every weekend here you can stay in any club till 3am then if you want more there are clubs that open at 2am and are open to midday the next day! Although most of the people there are not just drinking...

Remember kids do not buy drugs, become famous and people give you them for free!

If you are familar with England, basically what happens is that everybody comes out at 11, after drinking as much as they possibly can before Last Call and spilling onto the streets causing havoc and problems and it's been happening for decades. That's the logic behind this. If you don't have a last call and a mad rush to get slammed before you get kicked out, people will drink more responsibly and have a place to be instead of outside on the streets looking for trouble or some kind of entertainment on a Friday night.
