1. Calgary players only
2. I'll look at games played, production and PPG to list options.
3. My cut off won't effect options as I'll go deeper than required
4. I'll label them by rank (3rd line LW) but don't select the player that matches that role the best, pick the best player.
Day to Day
We elect a position, say 2nd line RW, remove that name and do the 3rd line RW the next day.
I'll post a summary as we go along.
Calgary Flames All Time Roster
Gary Roberts - Joe Nieuwendyk - RW1
Johnny Gaudreau - Doug Gilmour - RW2
Matthew Tkachuk - Sean Monahan - RW3
Alex Tanguay - C4 - RW4
I couldn’t decide so I gave an honour vote to a player who has, in my opinion, always embodied what being a Calgary Flame should be about.
I remember listening to The Fan discussing the upcoming 2007 draft, and they were talking about how he wanted to play for the Flames since he played in the Mac’s Midget Tournament in Calgary.
He’s been a model citizen and gives so much to the community with charity work.
And best of all, he seemingly hates our rivals as much as fans do. He’s one of my all time favourite Flames for sure. I know I wasn’t suppose to vote this way technically, but he’s also one hell of a hockey player so I did anyway.

I actually ended up voting for Backlund, just because he should get some recognition for his contributions to this franchise. The consummate professional and leader on this team for a long duration.
Otto/Nilsson probably win this vote, but another couple of players who deserves recognition are Langkow and Conroy
I think this little exercise has shown us how important the Center position is to build around. If I was building a team I think I would not come out of a rebuild until I had 2.5 elite centres, doing whatever it took to get them.
This has been hard. I feel that Otto and Nilsson belong in the top 4, but so do the 3 already voted in. Things are going to get really interesting when we get to RW. I think Bingo left that one last on purpose... for forward, I mean.
Its an interesting group in terms of what is left- I think there are obviously (while non elite) great Flames players and alumni here (Backlund, Connie, Langkow, Wilson, Riser (*player version), Yelle etc...) the whole list at least has something going for them , probably more than what we saw at LW
looks to me like we have the Offense first group
Nilsson is the clear leader here waving the flag for Reichel, Quinn, Savard, Stillman, Chouinard and others
then the 'two way' Centres (which is a pretty nice group of players)
Langkow, Conroy, Otto, Backlund...I've given my vote for Otto but this is a group of players that as a group are definitely a favorite player type of mine- sure they aren't all equivalent- Langkow brings more offense. He and Conroy are guys you can have as first line centers (although probably it means your team has problems) but you would prefer as a 2...or if they are a 3 you are stacked...Otto and Backlund come from the other direction, better as a 3 in a shutdown role, but if you are capped out or have other strengths, maybe they are a 2. Carey Wilson fits in here somewhere I think? or in group 1. dunno
then you have the defense first guys- Yelle is poster child. Look I love Stephane Yelle, but he just doesn't really score enough to move the needle. in a perfect world he's manning your 4th line not the 3rd. but boy he can play on my team anyday.

OK then...lets cherry pick stats and just ignore the other part of that equation. Only Fleury and MacInnis have a higher career ppg in the teams history.
Come on.

Ive seen this sentiment a few times recently and am curious where its coming from.
29 playoff games played as a Flame...28 pts registered.
I vividly remember that first season especially and he was tremendous.
His last season as a Flame he was brutal in the playoffs. Short handed goals were scored due to his lazy play in a three game sweep.
After that, the team decided they'd be a better team without Nilsson on it. They traded him for no immediate return and were a better team.
This is why I can't vote for Nilsson. He has flashy stats and was unbelievably talented, but he made the Flames a worse team.
Otto, on the other hand, is the highest scoring centre in the playoffs. He has 61 points, one ahead of Nieuwendyk. Otto also had all the intangibles. He completely neutralized Messier. He was the franchise's best faceoff man. He killed penalties. He played on the powerplay. He was an absolute warrior.

It's asking for the best player so I've got to go with Nilsson here.
If we were assembling a roster based on bottom 6 needs, then you best believe Monahan and Nilsson would not have been my #3 and 4 votes. It would have been Langkow/Yelle/Otto in the bottom 2 center slots.
