Tough one ...
Ramage only played parts of two seasons, but one was a big one and a cup, with him filling in for an injured Gary Suter.
Smith part of three seasons but was a captain.
Hanifin has a similar tenure, but not the same impact as either ... could easily be the guy down the road if he plays his whole contract here.
Have to go with Ramage. They don't have him with Suter out and they likely don't win that cup.

I really liked Ramage back in the day, but to me Hanifin is bound to be a fixture in the team's top 4 for years to come.

I voted for Hanifin for this round. Hopefully he is able to solidify as a top 4 and even take the next step of becoming a top 2

Not that the sky would fall ... but I kept thinking what if Hanifin is dealt this off season as rumoured, would he be better in terms of impact than Ramage?
Because of that I couldn't give him the edge based on playing more games that he might not play.

Interesting comparables
Both very high draft picks
Both came to the Flames in high profile trades
Ramage arrived to a team amongst the league's elite that fell on their faces in the playoffs , before going on to cup glory the next year (where he was forced into a key role with the Suter injury)
Hanafin arrived on a team that surprisingly found itself amongst the league's regular season elite that fell on their faces in the playoffs, rest of the story to be written
Ramage came to Calgary as the older/more polished player. I think its him for now but maybe not for long
the fact that Smith is 3rd place here is a nice change from previous recent numbers but that's where he falls here I think

Agree with SuperMatt.. Hanifin in a few years, but Ramage was rock(y) solid and the D didn't skip a beat on the way to the Cup win.

I always had a soft spot for Mr. Bonavista, Newfoundland.

This one should be a no brainer. Hanifin doesn't even come close!

I had to vote Smith. Even if he didn't score it in a Flames jersey he still scored one of the biggest goals for the Flames in franchise history.

It's a tough one. But I still think the price the Flames paid for Ramage was just too hefty. You never know the domino effect of things like would the Gilmour deal happen if this doesn't, or what happens to the Flames if they don't have Ramage. But Brett Hull is a top 10 all time goal scorer, and to have a year and a half of a guy who for much of it was the teams 4th or 5th defenceman seems pretty steep. I'd rather have paid it and have a cup than not pay it and have nothing. But you will be hard pressed to find any other deal in sports where a team paid a steeper price to win than that one.
At least with Hanifan the team also got Lindholm, and I don't think Hamilton will go down as a top 20 all time defenceman, and it was a given that Adam Fox was not going to sign with the Flames.

Yeah the Hull trade was horrible. Although Ramage helped win the 89 cup I'd argue losing Hull cost the Flames the chance for multiple cups in the early 90s.
I voted Smith because he was a captain.
