Been patiently waiting for this one. I always liked Makarov, such a smart player. Wasn't his Calder Trophy win the reason they changed the rules for Calder candidates (age-wise)?

ok well, hmm the answer is obvious
man the excitement about getting what was still an elite and world famous player when we were already the defending Stanley Cup champs- mind you he was replacing the sublime Loob, but still the rich get richer! and he made an mpact from the get go. obviously he wasn't a young guy when he got here and we missed Loob more than we thought but Makarov was always worth watching
there is no real 2nd place answer here. I do need to rant a bit about EdWard...generic player with the most generic name. he's not the former Flame I hate the most or anything but he's definitely- I dunno- the most useless? least memorable- for a guy who was here for parts of 5 seasons I mean...like he was always kicking around and kudos to him for nearly 300 NHL games but what did he do well ? he was big I guess, but his numbers even in college and AHL were so generic- never understood this player

Should be a really simple vote with Makarov winning 42 quite handily.

Remember when they used to bring the team's best player in every skill to the all star game and Ed Ward was the Flame's hardest shot guy?

I was about to insert a snarky comment about 'let me guess they missed the playoffs that year'...but no no they did not. these were the 95-96 Flames. dear god. how did this happen? anyways I had forgotten this nugget, but just found the video footage and there he is firing away against the likes of Macinnis, Chelios and Scott Stevens

Anyone not voting for Makarov should be banned. One of the greatest players to ever play the game, but doesn't get the accolades because he played for Red Army for so long. He's in the hall of fame. Give him the nod here. No protest votes please.

from the 1987 draft, through the Brett Hull trade in the spring of 1988 the Flames had the following RWers (all either Hall of Famers or HOF talents IMO) all in their 'system'. Now I realize they weren't all here in person or all in their prime at the same time, but lets admit this is pretty staggering
Brett Hull - inner circle Hall of Famer
Sergei Makarov- based on global body of work inner circle Hall of Famer
Joe Mullen- Hall of Famer
Lanny McDonald- Hall of Famer
Hakan Loob* not a Hall of Famer, but for international body of work a la Makarov should be- and was of the 6 of them the actual best RW in the league in 87-88
Theoren Fleury (*more of a center at that point, and we know his story)

That's correct - the oldest rookie to ever win it. Glad it was him on the Flames and no one else! https://www.prostockhockey.com/hocke...morial-trophy/

Makarov is going to win, but I dont think we should totally eliminate all votes for Micki Dupont.
And Ed Ward deserves an honourable mention on name recognition alone.
We must recognize that he has an awesome name.

I distinctly remember an intermission on feature on Ed Ward during the late 90’s. His girlfriend or wife was commenting on how fans would make fun of her and their family for having Ward jerseys. They actually had to explain their relation to him. Funny times!

Edward Ward. NHL All Star for hardest shot competition.

I’ve never seen Makarov play, and I hardly know who he is. But this was an easy vote.
