Joe Nieuwendyk.
The -very odd- but main reason I became a Flames fan.
I was playing NHL 94 on the Sega Megadrive over at a friends house, against the Flames.
I lost something like 5-0 and Joe Nieuwendyk scored a couple of goals.
Because of his Dutch name and the fact that he has the same initials as me I decided the Flames were going to be my team.

easy choice obviously.
I've always liked David Moss as well, had a decent career. Couple of good seasons in Calgary and over 500 NHL games as a 7th rounder, not bad.

A no-brainer vote today, taking stock of what these teams look like
The premise that the first team, of course, should essentially expect to win the cup every year (playing against 'regular' teams, not other teams best number player (a separate interesting debate). Are they there yet? no not really. The wings are (and almost finished) and the d is also great (although I don't love the 3rd pair- yet). goalies we know what is coming. Centers get a facelift starting tomorrow
2nd team the question was playoff team? president trophy team? cup contender? cup winner? I still don't know how that team will shake out. I like the Swede line up top if Juice and the Magic Man come to play- eventually I like a 2nd line anchored by Langkow with some 2 way wingers to play against other top lines (not there yet) then secondary scoring from the 3rd line and Yelle and Hunter anchoring a grind line- D I have hopes for eventually. goalies we will see
FIRST TEAM
Roberts Conroy Iginla
Gaudreau Monahan Mullen
Tkachuk Backlund Fleury
Pepper Chouinard Lanny
(Hrdina, Stajan, Riser, McCarthy)
Chopper Gio
Suter Sarge
Housley Phaneuf
(Ference)
Turek
-wingers getting close
SECOND TEAM
Huselius Nilsson Loob
C/T Langkow Bourque
Stillman Jokinen Hudler
Lombardi Yelle Hunter
(Bure, Bigern, Simon)
Reinhart Brodie
Bouw Musil
Albelin Sarich
(Commodore)
Riggin
-Finally Bure to the pressbox !

well he was cool!!
Joe Who obviously here.
Plett probably next, feel a bit for Bullard who had his flaws but some big production here although short tenure split over 2 numbers- no chance, and yes props to David Moss who was in the Flames organization for 12 years

I'm a big Willi Plett fan, but this goes to Nieuwendyk without any hesitation.

It’s Newy, but Plett was one of the first names I knew on the Flames. I remember his series winner against Chicago in the first year.

Best nickname came from Mike Lownsborough of 2&7 fame.

^^ there is an autographed version of that picture (massive) in the Gordon Townsend gym at the Children's Hospital. Incredible that with all that talent the Flames can never beat the Tigers!

But
Willi could do it all. He could play the game straight up, and he would take anyone on that came calling.
And as Bingo pointed out...he was a damn cool looking guy.

My memories of David Moss are overwhelmed by the image of him missing an open net in overtime in game six versus Detroit in the 07 playoffs. Kipper absolutely stood on his head that game. Maybe one of his last great games as a Flame and it ended up as a loss that eliminated the Flames from the playoffs.

OVER the net! Unreal. I had the same flashback when I saw his name.

Yeah, whenever I hear or see his name, I always think, “yeah he was awesome”... but I can never remember quite why I think that.
