Flames Talbot: I want to be a starter

sounds like the Flames will have to make a choice this summer

https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/19...-in-the-league

Quote:
"I obviously wouldn't mind coming back here either. I loved it here. It's a great situation, a great locker room and, obviously, I have a really good relationship with Ritter and Siggy (goalie coach Jordan Sigalet)," Talbot said. "So I mean, I wouldn’t rule out coming back, but, obviously, my goal coming here was to show the rest of the league that I still have it in me to be a starting goalie and I think I accomplished that."

Talbot added he would be open to a return if he could get "a fair chance off the bat" to be the starter, something he felt he didn't receive this season.

Rittich is signed through the 2020-21 campaign.

Given the inconsistent play of Rittich, I thought Talbot was given a fair chance at being the starter.

Where's he going to start? His best chance to be a starter would be in Calgary especially how Rittich played for the second half of 2 seasons now.

Feels like a bit of an about-face compared to his radio hit recently where he was eager to say that he would love to come back next season.

Good luck to him. Hope Zagidulin pushes for the backup spot next year with Wolf and Parsons getting experience in the AHL. Had high hopes for Gillies but just don't see NHL in his future.

Wolf turned 19 yesterday. He's going back to Everett next year.

If Talbot is gone, the Flames will bring someone else to replace him. My best guess would be Aaron Dell. Zagidulin and Parsons will most likely split duties in the A (assuming they can figure out Zag's contract situation).

Like the honesty. , odd timing if the season resumes. Or perfect timing! I like Talbot. But like Ritter, he had his downswings too. Although his were at the beginning of the year and he got better as the season rolled on

Zagidulin will be back if Talbot's status is up in the air.

Let's not forget Talbot was absolute poo the first half of the year. He had a hot streak before the season got shut down but did he show throughout the year he is a guy I am comfortable with being our starter? No.

I feel the Same about Rittich. Would love a clean slate and Sign a guy like Lehner.

I think his performance was pretty consistent actually, he just got the short end of the stick with team efforts and back-to-back games early which gave him a bad record. In fact out of his losses, he probably deserves more blame in the 2nd half compared to the first.

Oct/Nov/Dec: 3-7-0, .915
Flames scored 0 or 1 goal in 5 of the 7 losses.
B2B losses in SJ/WSH/VGS/MIN, also lost to WSH/DAL/PIT.

Jan/Feb/Mar: 9-3-1, .923
Flames scored 3 or 4 goals in 3 of the 4 losses.

His worst effort was that shootout loss to STL in January.

I'd rather have Talbot than Rittich, but I'm sure that's a minority opinion.

Not overly happy with our goalie situation as a whole. I'd rather they actually pony up for a good goalie either as a UFA or in trade. I'd still love Murray on the Flames. I don't know why but I can honestly see some weird situation where Holtby becomes a Flame.

We can’t afford to go after a top tier free agent goalie and have Rittich as our backup, not even for a year. Unless we can unload Rittich we need to use that cap space to replace two top 4 dmen and we desperately need a bonafide top 6 scorer.

I'm a huge Zagidullin fan, but he's nowhere near being ready for prime time in the NHL. Heck, there's rumors he's being courted by some KHL clubs to play in Russia next year. I would love to get any of Murray, Holtby, Lehner, or Georgiev-not too sure how realistic that would be.

Holtby is not the answer. He's been one of the least effective goalies in the league over the last three years. The Caps generally won the Cup in spite of him. This year, it wouldn't be outlandish to claim that he was the second-worst or even the worst goalie in the league.

Everything in your post except for this is accurate. Washington was facing-down elimination in Round One before Holtby came in and got the Capitals over the hump. Playoff success for goalies is weird. With frequency it is more about which goalie is well rested and gets on a roll at the right time than it is about sustained success. In 2018 that goalie was Braydon Holtby. Last year it was Jordan Binnington. Next year it will be someone else.

I remain unconvinced that a big-money goalie would be any improvement over what the Flames iced this year.

When they are both at their best, no question I prefer Rittich.

Numbers aside, Talbot is not a very positionally sound goalie. I'd like him back as a 1b though.

There were a lot of decent goalies on the market or still free agents when the season started last year. I'd go with Rittich/Gilles and then see if a DeSmith drops again. No one was prepared for that.

The goaltending duo was fine this year.

When they were losing games it was the brutal transition game, and, oh, remember top liner Buddy Robinson throwing the puck in a corner for Johnny to dig it out ?
