I wonder in retrospect how he would have done here in Calgary? I suppose there isn't the same appetite to bring him here as there was when the Flames ended up hiring Burke.

To his credit he took them from an organization that had made the playoffs just once in 8 years to a perennial playoff team and division contender. It's one of those things where the organization can only do so much and the players have to fulfil the end of their bargain and they didn't when it came to the playoffs.

I agree with you - i think overall he did a fairly good job. I think he should have moved on from Dubas a season or two beforehand - or just hired a better GM to begin with. However, overall I do think he did have a positive impact, including all the off-ice stuff. I know Murray Edwards thought very highly of him and wanted to bring him in. I imagine with the current hockey ops structure that this won't be even looked at, and I think the rumour is that the Islanders are interested in him.
I wonder what changes he would have made had he been the President in Calgary. I think he would have showed a bit more patience in the rebuild, for instance. Burke was famous for wanting accelerated rebuilds, so perhaps Treliving's moves early on after 2015 were perhaps partially influenced by Burke? Maybe Treliving (or Dubas if Shanahan ended up going that way) would have had a slower rebuild here?
Just some 'what ifs' that are interesting to think about.

Saw some rumours that they may keep Lou around which is causing issues with the GM search.,

Yup. While he is accountable ultimately for the last 10 years, before he arrived, the Leafs were no good, constantly out of the playoff picture. He fixed their image which was definitely one of his key objectives.

Shanahan banked on skill which isn't a bad thing because the assets they currently have are really good.
That said, he stuck with the core 4 for way too long. Marner specifically. He also let his GMs deal many picks for rentals who didn't resign with them. All in all he previously assembled a good scouting staff and a GM who put it together (in Dubas), and rode that wave. But it was obvious that Marner and Matthews could not change their style for the playoffs and he stuck with it.

Shanahan was plan A for the Flames before they got Burke. It was also a very new position in hockey.

Been listening to a few podcasts this week just because I love the Leafs in misery, and there seems to be some thoughts that for the first part of his tenure, Shanahan was great. But then he got too locked in the core and didn't want to make any changes, despite repeated evidence that something major needed to.

I'd hire Shanny to replace Maloney in a heartbeat.
