No 3D crowds for PS2.
And I get some form of locker room and ice girl cutscenes every game.

I have to say in my experience, the EA game is superior to ESPN....Now I haven't played EA 2005 yet, but if it improves upon last years then it has to be better.....
ESPN is not my game of choice....I bought it Tuesday and the players all look like Neanderthals, the crowds are poor, the arenas are weak, I wish Gary Thorne could pronounce people's names correctly.
Also, the game play is well, boring. The player movements are terrrible, one timers are done on totally unnatural footing. It's just not a great game.
the Franchise mode is also disappointing. The only extra besides Contracts is scouting. there's no ticket pricing, attentance info, etc....
I look forward to NHL 2005 SO MUCH!

I totally agree with you, I dont know whats so great about ESPN, three years in a row Ive bought it, and three years I continue to get disapointed. Every year I always buy EA as well. EA's game play and graphics are far more superior than ESPN at least with NHL 2004 it was and Im sure 2005 will be even better. I think ESPN is trying to make it to much of an arcade game. ESPN's players are huge up top but there legs are small, the goalies are totally retarted looking. The Saddledome looks nothing like it should! The only reason we know its the dome cause of the ice thats about it. But for $29.99 its a pretty decent game, I guess I'll try and play as much of this game for now till NHl 2005 comes out.

Gameplay is boring? Well that's your opinion, but at least it's realistic. I personally like having to earn my goals as opposed to EA where you can skate through the opposing team like they were pylons. I've watched gameplay for NHL 2005 and it's as unsimlike as ever. You can pass right through player's feet and they make no attempt to stop them whatsoever. You may think player movements in ESPN NHL 2k5 are terrible, but it is widely regarded that the ESPN series gives you the best control over your players than any other hockey games.
EA didn't even have NHL arenas last year. I know they have them this year, but based on screenshots ESPN's are clearly better IMO. Regardless, how can you complaining about weak arenas in ESPN when in all of our EA experiences up until mid-September they don't even have NHL rinks?
Concerning franchise, you'd rather set the prices of your hotdogs and buy jumbo jets than scout players that you might consider acquiring over the season, beef up your minor league roster and get game results and scouting reports for your future NHL stars? Again, it's your opinion, but your argument is weak at best. Scouting or setting the prices of food/tickets (which really mean nothing in the long run). It's your choice.

JayP, what was the last EA NHL version you played? What you are describing sounds like 2003. Last year it was difficult to score, and to do so I had to make good plays.
I don't get how people can say EA is too easy to score in. I could make it impossiible to score if I wanted to by tweaking the settings. It makes me wonder if the people complaining just pulled it off the shelf and played it with default settings.
I don't see how you can say NHL 2005 has the most unrealistic looking gameplay. Did you even watch the gameplay that you said you did? OF course he can pass through his legs... watch real hockey, it happens.

And how is he holding on to his stick? Is it like glued to his hand or something. Yep, ESPN definetly is more realistic.

And how do you know which movies I watched?
The only thing you guys can make fun of is how big the goalie is (which could be any goalie in the league seeing as you can't see his number) and you can edit that to your liking. And the fact that the stick in the goalie's hands doesn't look 100% right. Spoken like true EA fans - fluff, fluff, fluff! I'll take my great gameplay anyday.
"I don't get how people can say EA is too easy to score in. I could make it impossiible to score if I wanted to by tweaking the settings. It makes me wonder if the people complaining just pulled it off the shelf and played it with default settings."
Sounds like ESPN, but no one mentions that do they now?

I don't see how you can say NHL 2005 has the most realistic gameplay. Anyone in their right mind will tell you ESPN is more realistic. That's not a knock on EA that's just the way each company is designing their game. And how often do you see players even attempt to pass the puck through a players skates? Not very often, unless Lemieux is on the ice.

It's common sense that EA displays their games on Beginner or Easy for previews and not the hardest setting. You should know this by now.

Graphics aren't everything. The gameplay in ESPN has been far more realistic for the last few years...can't comment on this year's version though since EA's game hasn't been released yet.

As per my game play I find it much easier to score goals in ESPN than it is in EA....Other than the defensemen coming back it excessively easy to break out, and setting up one timers are extremely easy to get off. The arenas in ESPN are TERRIBLE!!!! When you are waiting for the play to start, there's no detail to the stands. It looks like they just slapped the crowd onto the base picture on the arena, but the spaces between seats makes it look completely unrealistic. The crowd doesn't match the clip shots between plays. The players look like neandethals, the goalies look like they're on massive steroids, and the animation of players taking shots and checking are terrible, nothing like actual hockey.
As per franchise mode, I do like to price my own crap. But with NHL 2004, and presumably 2005, you still draft your players. You still go through the motions of finding the right person to draft. And when 2005 comes out by EA, you'll actually have a GOAL in franchise mode. Specific teams will have a goal, Toronto will have a goal to reach the finals, or win the cup, Calgary will have a goal to make the playoffs....If you don't reach your goal, you are accountable. I like that.
I'll be able to tell more when NHL 2005 comes out, but as of now, I can say that NHL 2004 is still much better than ESPN NHL 2K5....ESPN's game is poor in my opinion, it lacks the real NHL feeling.
Also, NHL 2005 will have the actual World Cup of Hockey. That's bloody sweet.

EXACTLY-----Anyone remember the between the legs gem from Mario in the 2002 Olympics?
Edit: Also, in REAL hockey, players aren't hunched over for the entire game, they coast, the stand upright often....In NHL 2005 players will coast and look like actual NHL players. My Calgary Flames in ESPN all look like a team full of Quasimodo Hunch Backs.

ESPN plays great, but NHL 2005 plays great aswell... It's a totally different game catered to the more casual hockey fan and this doesn't mean the game sucks. Is it not possible to enjoy 2 different NHL games??? Seriously Jay P, layoff the ESPN juice. They have proven they aren't gods.

The same thing could be said about anyone in this thread. Neither game is perfect, but I strongly believe ESPN is the much better game. If they want to call EA the better game already w/o even playing I can the do same thing with ESPN.
