Default Marine Engine Repair Courses

Anyone know of any place you can take classes in small engine repair, specifically 2 stroke marine engines? I've looked online and the only place I can find that offers them is Olds College or NAIT. Neither is an ideal location.

I am assuming you looked at SAIT.

I did, yes. And as well only found a course for Marine Diesel. Still worthwhile I suppose but in my case, 2 stroke would be far more useful.

I'm actually quite surprised it's as hard as it is to find a course like this in Calgary.

Maaaaaaaany hours of watching youtube videos. Better than nothing but man I'd like me some hands on experience. And preferably with an engine I don't own

crazy timeliness. I have an outboard motor that I need to replace the lower unit on over winter. I've been watching a ton of Youtube videos on it for a few weeks now, but it is still daunting.

if you find a hobbyist class on it, please post it. It would make me feel less likely to destroy my motor :P

You won't destroy anything, just bag and tag all parts you remove and take tons of pictures. You will learn so much and the sense of accomplishment at the end is worth the moments of self doubt. The key is to be organized and methodical.

You mean the leg? That parts strikes me as fairly straightforward tbh.

What year/make/model is it?

And ya, if I find anything, will certainly let you know.

I know 2-strokes are slowly being phased out but still thousands of them in use in Alberta and BC. Learning minor repair and maintenance would be a lot of fun.

Yeah, its small engine repair basically. Growing up with a cheap father I learned how to make a lawnmower work well beyond all reason.

I've taken a few outboards apart, just the small auxiliary ones mind you, and they're fairly straightforward.

2004 evinrude etec 90hp

videos don't make it look too bad. I think some (all?) of the gears inside are wrecked, so I need to take it completely apart. Then I'll need to replace the water pump and reseal the entire thing.

Fun project! Sounds like you'd be hard pressed to make things any worse by doing it yourself.

I have a 50 HP Mercury used mainly on Van Island. Starts OK cold, hard pressed to get it started hot. Doesn't run well at full throttle. I'd love to completely strip the carbs and rebuild.

Oh yeah, it's screwed. Towed it 14 hours to northern Saskatchewan in August, it ran for 15 minutes, then a loud angry grinding sound and forward and reverse gears were completely gone.

Fun trip. Thank god we keep a spare boat up there for emergencies.
