Ducks needed any body because they lost Manson for a long while.

Why do teams keep trading for this guy? He was declining rapidly 4 years ago. What does he add that you can’t get from a call up? All with a significant cap hit.
 I don’t get it.

Gudbranson is flat out bad. Horrible cap hit AND a horrible hockey player at any price.
As far as this trade goes, it's garbage for garbage because Martinsen also sucks really bad. He really shouldn't be in the NHL. In fact you can also make a case that Gudbranson shouldn't either.

Guessing they tried as hard as they could to push JJ onto the Ducks, but they just weren’t biting without a monster sweetener attached.

Pretty bad trade tree here for the Penguins...
They traded a 1st for David Perron in 2014. Then, Perron for Carl Hagelin in 2016. Traded Hagelin for Tanner Pearson in 2018. Pearson for Gudbranson earlier this year. And now this.

Well, TBF, Hagelin came in, got 27 points in 37 games, plus 16 in 24 PO games, and at the end of the day the Penguins won a cup. And again in 2017 (though Hagelin was nowhere near as impactful).

What makes it worse is that 1st round pick ends up being Barzal.
