Sounds like $9.25M AAV. Good deal for the Avs.

Who would have picked Connor and Honka as the last to sign?
Obviously we know now Honka wants out.

I know they're professionals but I have to wonder how MacKinnon feels when his contract gets dwarfed by Rantanen's. I mean, after the first couple million it almost doesn't matter, but it's comical how cheap MacKinnon's deal is becoming.

Technically but since he signed somewhere I don't count him in my head.
Same with that Melalaenen(sp?) guy.

The key though is he is an out in the contract to return to the NHL before the cut off. Not sure if the Melalaenen kid has that.

I wonder if the terrible Leaf contracts are a byproduct of the media overhyping their players.
Sometimes it pays to fly under the radar.
On a different note, Rantanen sure was a great draft pick by Colorado. 10th overall and almost 100 point pace? Plus he's a 6'4 RW? Can't ask for much more than that.

Since he knows that his next extension will dwarf these deals handed out to Rantanen and Marner, he probably feels pretty good about it.

If the Flames sign Chucky to anything lower than an AAV of 11.25 and a length longer than 3 years, they will have been better off both short and long term than this.
Love the player...and would rather pay this for Rantannen than what Toronto paid for Marner, but I am still clearly not calibrated to the "new" market...

@DimFilipovic
The Avalanche now have Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen at $15.55M combined annually for each of the next 4 years which takes them through the meat of their 20s

No....media hype is a thing in Toronto for sure.
But
This is a GM who is/was just way too inexperienced to have been given the position of dealing with these contracts.
Clearly he has a great eye for talent and maybe even can make a good trade, but he has no idea what he is doing when it comes to negotiations with agents repping free agents. He hasn't done well with a single one of them...at least value wise.

No, this is about right. It's not a good deal. It just looks like a good deal next to Marner's, which is an awful deal. Marner should have been about an 8.75 cap hit on a 6 year term.
