Source close to the situation tells me the Brayden Point contract situation is pretty close to being resolved. Amazing progress given they were $2 million apart before the weekend, with the Bolts’ three year offer stalled at $5.66 million annually.

There has been serious progress in talks between the Lightning and RFA star centre Brayden Point. My understanding is that both sides are getting closer to a deal.

It's believed if both sides can bring it to a close, it will be a three-year bridge deal

Brayden Point signed for 3 years at $6.75 million.
If the Bolts get Point locked in on a bridge deal, I think Tkachuk ends up being a 2-3 year bridge as well. I would prefer 2 year with the other contracts that will be expiring in 3 years on this roster.
For Point, this would line him up for a massive payday when that fabled US tv deal monies blows up the cap.
If it's a three-year deal under $6.5 million AAV for Point, I'd imagine Tkachuk gets something very similar if not lower.
Pointe had 41 goals and 92 points. Yes he played on an offensive machine with plenty of scoring weapons but so did Tkachuk. 34 goals and 77 points is a significant drop in points and his contract should reflect that.

Valid points, but Tampa has always gotten by with weirdly low RFA contracts. I think their non-existent state taxes could provide an advantage.
But I agree, Tkachuk should have less value in a vacuum.

3 year bridge would be an unmitigated disaster. That gives him arb rights and 1 year from ufa. A smart player would just go to arb sign the one year award regardless of dollars and become a UFA the next year. Flames would have zero leverage. 2 year bridge or 5-8 year deal is all I'd consider from the flames perspective

I think that there is also a team culture of team friendly deals. Tampa has yet to have a player so extort the team for an extra couple of million. Its a dressing room full over players who took a little less money then they were worth.
I know that players say business is business, but there are certainly tensions brought up as a result of who gets paid what, and how they go about getting that money.

If only it were that simple...if Pointe signs at that amount it's one of the best contracts in the league.
Good comparable for the team but the player would use other ones.
Is a 90 point player worth 11M or 6.5? Massive gap
It would be hilarious if a team in the Leafs division made such a good deal.

So Calgary boy Point is 4 years away from becoming a Flame? Rejoice!

A 3-year deal sounds like a bargain (due to its AAV), but with a larger final year, it would ensure Tkachuk reaches UFA in a great time for him and ensure a big number for that 4th year.
It also ensures his next contract will be huge with UFA bargaining rights.
But it's likely the only way Tkachuk gets signed in any kind of reasonable deal.
It would certainly help Calgary's cap in the short term. It would likely be greater than a $2M savings per year vs. a long term deal.
