Leafs trade Zaitsev, Brown, Carcone to Ottawa for Ceci, Harpur, Luchuk, and 3rd
Ceci is RFA and Zaitsev still has 5 yrs @ $4.5 mil left. According to Dreger, Ottawa is also on Zaitsev's 10 team no trade list.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
The OTT-TOR trade that will send Nikita Zaitsev and Connor Brown to the Sens for Cody Ceci should be consummated tomorrow morning once TOR pays Zaitsev’s $3M signing bonus. At least six pieces (players or picks) included but the primaries are Zaitsev, Brown and Ceci.
News UpdateThe Ottawa Senators announced today the club has acquired defenceman Nikita Zaitsev, forward Connor Brown and forward Michael Carcone from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenceman Cody Ceci, defenceman Ben Harpur, forward Aaron Luchuk and Columbus' third-round selection in the 2020 NHL Draft (previously acquired by Ottawa).

Ceci is worse than Zaitsev, but Toronto gets away from that rough contract.

Toronto could just not qualify Ceci and rid themselves of Zaitsev's cap hit.

Ceci also has arb rights IIRC....he wont come uber cheap, but he should come in less than Zaitsev and it wont be for 5 more years either.

I think this could very easily work for both sides.

Someone has to play defense for them.
They arent going to have a dime to spend on UFA once Marner is on the books i dont suspect, so they best find a couple Ceci types somewhere.
Man are they up against it.

Too late for that. The Sens qualified Ceci before the deadline and that will transfer over in the trade.

Lol why would the Sens qualify Ceci at 4.6m? He's replacement level.

Yeah they are about 12 million under right now.
Just noticed they have 4.44M spent on their ENTIRE defense core as of today.
That's remarkable.

Great trade for the Leafs. Salary dump without trading any draft picks. They aren't married long term to Ceci and that Zaitsev contract is terrible. Kind of surprised the Senators are bailing the Leafs out like this unless they really like Zaitsev.

Zaitsev is definitely serviceable. Recently the Toronto media and fans have been on his case, and this year he wasn't up to par, but it's the scapegoat mentality here. It was definitely an off-year for him and when you're paid that much you expect more, but given his age he should be fine. Ottawa doing this is a worthwhile gamble.

Side note: The Score app posted about the Leafs, "However, the team can place Nathan Horton and his $5.3M cap hit on long-term injured reserve to free up space."
1) I don't know how that works
2) Can't believe Nathan Horton is still on the books

Yup thats my read on it too. Zaitsev isnt a terrible player or anything, but is way overpaid for way to long....and those guys draw the ire of fans and make the GM look bad. Not his fault as no one put a gun to the Leafs head (Lou i think in this case).

Help, save, whatever.
|
Zaitsev is decent for sure. When he doesn't have the puck he is a great defender. The second the puck is on his stick he is horrible and basically just gives it back to the opposition.
It's a mystery why Lou felt the need to lock him up for such a long-term with such a high salary but I guess it was one of his Cliff Fletcher moments.

I agree with Erick above that this looks like Ottawa bailing out the leafs, unless there is a pick going with zaitsev.
