Icon48 Sekera, Schlemko, Darling on waivers for buyout purposes

Sekera is a surprise. Oilers might make a significant signing tomorrow.

Philadelphia Flyers @NHLFlyers
The #Flyers have placed defenseman David Schlemko on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract.

Edmonton Oilers @EdmontonOilers
The #Oilers have placed defenceman Andrej Sekera on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a buyout.

According to capfriendly Sekara’s buyout counts for $2.5 m on the Oilers’s cap for 2019-20 and 2029-21. Then $1.5 m for 2021-22 and 2022-23.

Dont get the Oilers move unless it's for a trade....what does Myers, Stralman or Gardiner give you that you dont already get from Sekera? Injury risk maybe.

Sekera is a pretty good dman...but those health issues must be scary enough for this to happen.

The Sekera buyout saves the Oilers $3 million in cap space for the next two seasons.

The Schlemkat has been having some injury problems. Can’t think of a player who fits the definition of journeyman better than him.

He is always the player I think of when I see teams pay big $’s or trade for bottom pairing D. He filled in pretty well for the Flames when he was here.

I wonder if the plan in Edmonton is to fill out the blue line with rookies. Oilers fans are summarily convinced that there are multiple Norris Trophy winners among their defense prospects—one might say several Giordanos.

Most of the chatter has been focused on them adding a goalie and another winger.

A touch under 15 million would say otherwise. But you’re the master. Sorry sir.

Despite not looking great coming back from injury, Sekera still managed a +4.1 CF% rel in 24 games last seasons.

Of course, that could be more of an indication of the quality of the team he played on, and a small sample size.

So, no Stone buyout. That obviously could change in August if the Flames take anybody to arbitration and open up the second window, but for now, he remains on the team.

a little surprise about sekera, based on stuff Staples was saying, they thought he looked pretty solid in his return...of course they were probably had their homer blinders on, but its not like the Oilers have a solid D. Thought they'd keep him around for depth at the very minimum...

Schlemko is interesting because they only save like 100k in cap space vs playing him in the AHL
