Panthers trade Reimer to Canes for a 6th and buyouting Darling
can pretty much assume Bobrovsky is a lock for Miami now?
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
FLA has traded goalie James Reimer to Carolina.
Bob McKenzie
@TSNBobMcKenzie
So CAR gets Reimer for Scott Darling and a sixth-round pick, which means FLA has to assume the buyout on Darling as part of the transaction.

Canes should make out well here helping Florida and come away with a 1B goalie in the process.
Edit: NVM. A 6th? Florida pays that all day long

This is a big win for Florida.
Andy Strickland @andystrickland
#flapanthers aren’t retaining any salary in James Reimer trade to Carolina.
nm Florida has to buyout Darling as part of the trade

Well niether team is even at the floor yet, so not surprising. Though i believe this will get Carolina there.
Reimer was gawd awful last year though, so getting anything for him is a win for Fla.
Florida has zero goalies on their roster after this.

Baffling from Hurricanes perspective
Why not just sign your backup from last year who is better and cheaper

I think a Bobrovsky/Montembeault tandem is very likely for Florida next year

Frank Seravalli @frank_seravalli
By trading James Reimer to #Canes and buying out Scott Darling, #FlaPanthers will end up with a net cap savings of:
$2.17 million in 2019-20
$1.07 million in 2020-21
---
Then they'll be hit with $1.18 million cap charges in 2021-22 and 2022-23, as cap rises likely significantly.

^ what’s the rationale for significant rise in cap in 2021?

Current US TV deal expires. Expected new one will be considerably more.

I guess the belief is that TV money will just keep increasing forever. IIRC the current US deal is not that lucrative so maybe it’s true, but the NHL nationally in the US is a non factor. It’s the regional coverage that gets some attention in local markets but with the consolidation of regional networks, maybe that is negotiated at the same time too?

Yeah...ESPN has indicated that they want back into the business of broadcasting the NHL...that alone will make the deal more significant, not that the last deal was anything to sneeze at either. I suspect we see a shared deal between ESPN/NBC sports.

There has been quite a bit of talk that ESPN would like to have the NHL back. And like you pointed out the current deal is very small. It’s almost certain that the next one will be far more lucrative, even if it doesn’t get close to the Canadian deal.
