Default Start of season SC odds

I am starting to think that I need to pay closer attention to Philadelphia this season. Could they be a sleeper?

... also, how hilarious is it seeing the Oilers with equal odds to Anaheim, Dallas, Columbus, and better odds than Calgary, Chicago, and Colorado? Fools and their money.

I already put $25 on the Flames to win the Division at +560.

It depends on which version of Brian Elliott decides to show up.

They're just trying to milk Toronto fans for money by inflating their odds, worked last year with Edmonton.

Odds are ultimately set by how they think fans will bet.

e: lol @ edmonton getting mid-tier odds after being a bottom tier team and not improving.

Yup, more people want to put their money on TO and Edmonton compared to Calgary, hence the odds.

At those odds, Calgary and Detroit are good value bets for long (and very long) shots. Ottawa isn't a good bet no matter what the odds. Arizona is really good value, should be relatively much higher on the list, but there aren't any fans who want to bet on them, hence the long odds. If I put money on anyone at the given odds, it would be them. But no matter who you bet on, you're more likely to lose your money than win.

San Jose looks like good value to me.

I found the best value was Columbus winning their division at 7.5 to 1. Columbus and Sam Jose odds to to win the cup look attractive as well

Nope, Elliott is still the starter, and Neuvirth the backup. It all depends on Anthony Stolarz. He's been tabbed as the next starter for a while, and he has good potential to be a top half of the league starter this year. He lost all of last year due to knee injuries, but had 2 seasons before that where he posted good AHL numbers, and some very good NHL numbers in limited action.

If Stolarz can't recover from his injuries, Elliott will still be his old self, and the Flyers will be sunk again. Carter Hart is the other goalie in the system, but is probably at least another year away from the NHL. He dominated junior, and is playing his first season in the AHL this year.

But I like the rest of their team, especially considering how good some of their youth is. Defense could be better, but Andy McDonald is out for 6 weeks with an injury. The lineup is relatively strong and has some elite talent. This is what they are projected to look like:

Giroux-Courturier-Konecny
Van Riemsdyk-Patrick-Voracek
Lindblom-Weal-Simmonds
Raffl-Laughton-Weise

Gostisbehere-Provorov
Sanheim-Gudas
Hagg-Folin

*IR-Andy McDonald

Elliott/Neuvirth

It's not like every team starts off with 31:1 odds and then they adjust from there. A good way to predict how fans will bet is how they've already bet. Ultimately, the point of betting lines is to make money for the people setting the lines.

I just mean that yes the books come out with certain odds, but the odds are based on betting and change quickly based on that.

Can I just bet against the Oilers somewhere? I get a free lunch pretty much every year, but maybe I should up that.

How the hell do they put the Coilers ahead of the Flames? Have they looked at their roster?

I think the McGregor vs Mayweather odds are the best example of this, Connor's odds varied wildly in the months leading up to the fight. People bet on him like crazy and Vegas didn't want to go broke in the off chance that he actually won that thing.
