Default Jack Adams finalists: Berube, Cooper, Trotz

No Peters.

I was going to say Trotz but what Berube did with the Blues and their rise from last place to now has me rethinking my choice.

I am honestly surprised, and I am not as enamoured by Berube as others like Trotz and Peters. St Louis had an incredible second half, but it coincided entirely with a spectacular rookie performance from Jordan Binnington. Berube didn't have a lot to do with a great run by his goalie, prior to which the Blues were completely dead in the water and languishing in last place in the NHL.

Peters took a non playoff team to second in the league with meh goaltending. He should have gotten a nom.

This is a shock even Sutter got a nomination getting the Flames to a sixth seed.

The fact that the Blues managed to make the playoffs was a miracle, yes, but early predictions were that the Blues should be a playoff team anyways, so they were more playing to their ability. Islanders and Hurricanes were not expected to be there, so surprised Rod Brind'Amour didn't make the nominations.

On the plus side, we don't have to worry about the Jack Adams curse hitting the Flames next season.

Yeah I really expected to see Peters or Brind'Amour as the third finalist. Will be interesting to see the whole top 10

Either way it's really just between Trotz and Cooper anyway.

Quite surprised Peters wasn’t one of the three. I think it is Trotz award though.

After the poor play down the stretch and the playoff stinker, I don’t mind this.

noob questions. Are these awards voted on around the end of the season, as in before playoffs? Do the voters/league know who the winners (and obviously top three) when the finalists are announced?

As far as I am aware, votes are submitted at the end of the regular season, and the top 3 vote getters are revealed as the playoffs get started.

Here you go -

Members of the NHL Broadcasters' Association submitted ballots for the Jack Adams Award at the conclusion of the regular season, with the top three vote-getters designated as finalists. The winner will be announced Wednesday, June 19, during the 2019 NHL Awards™ presented by Bridgestone at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

All votes are casted prior to the playoffs starting. So to answer your second question, the league knows, the voters do not.

Voting on the Jack Adams Award is done at the end of the regular season, before the playoffs. It's voted on by the members of the NHL Broadcasters' Association. Every coach is eligible for consideration and the broadcasters vote on a ranked ballot, picking their top three choices. The votes are tallied using a points system wherein the first place votes are worth five points each, second place votes are worth three points, and third place votes are worth one point each. The "finalists" are really just the top three in the points tally; they're not "nominees" (every coach is eligible, they don't have to be "nominated").

If it's a regular season award, you definitely have to give it to Cooper

a little bit surprised... but last place in the NHL on Jan 3rd to 3rd in the division is pretty impressive too...Berube was definitely 4th on my list, but i can see why some he jumped Peters...

would be interested to see how the voting broke down

I thought the 5 potential finalists were these three and Peters and Brindamour.

I didn’t think Peters would win over Trotz anyways, so meh.

I feel the same and about the Blues in general. Sure their turnaround was remarkable during the 2nd half. So does that mean the coach was only good for 1/2 the season? Doesn't seem like he was the best coach if he was only good for 50% of the season.

IMO a season like the Isles had is much more indicative of good coaching. The Isles went from the worst defensive team, to the best in 1 year. All after losing their franchise player. To me that's good coaching. Trotz known to be a defensive stalwart, and he showed his abilities when he won them a Jennings trophy.

Even Cooper is a better choice then Berube. Cooper consistently had his team at the #1 spot. CONSISTENCY is the sign of a good coach. That's why I also think Peters also deserves a nod over Berube. The Flames were consistently the best in the West most of the season.

The Blues were out of it and came roaring back. But the fact they were out of it at all, tells us they had consistency issues all season.

I'll take the coaches who got their teams into the top spots, and stayed like that all season long.

But as mentioned, it's probably a silver lining Peters wasn't included, so we don't have to worry about the Jack Adams curse getting him fired sooner rather than later. I hope he's around for years to come.
