another great write up from Wes Gilbertson

https://calgarysun.com/sports/hockey...ind-for-flames

Quote:
Derek MacKinnon was there to focus on another guy.

At another position.

On the other team, in fact.

For MacKinnon, the Calgary Flames’ director of pro personnel, the purpose of this March 2016 scouting mission to Prague was for a live look at winger Daniel Pribyl, perched among the leading point-producers in the Czech Extraliga.

“So I went to the game with Daniel’s agent, was sitting with his agent, and as the game progressed, I literally leaned over to his agent and said, ‘Who is the goalie?’ ” MacKinnon recalled, noticing that Pribyl and his HC Sparta Praha pals were having trouble solving the lanky lad in the opposing crease. “The agent asked me, ‘Why?’ and I said, ‘Well, I really like him.’

“He was just explosively quick. I think they scored five on him, so the results weren’t there, but he probably stopped five breakaways and two or three other ‘A’ chances where he just exploded across the net.

“Now, there were other holes in his game, but he caught your eye.”

So who was this goalie?

A relatively raw and relatively unknown David Rittich, a workhorse that winter for BK Mlada Boleslav.

Not wanting to sound the We-Gotta-Sign-This-Guy! alarm after just one viewing, MacKinnon worked on digging up video of Rittich.

Impressed again, he forwarded the footage to Flames goaltending coach Jordan Sigalet.

“Jordan, right from Day 1, was like, ‘Holy, this guy has something,’ ” MacKinnon said.

Has something, indeed.

Nice to see the Flames finally having success with someone from the Czech league after Cervenka, Pribyl, and even Jagr didn't work out.

I guess Sigalet isn't as bad as some posters think he is.

Treliving says stuff like this a lot, and for a long time was the brunt of good-natured ribbing about “The Process,” but there is a crucial reason he continues to repeat himself. He is playing the long game. Fans live in the moment, but he can not afford to.

It is good to remember that from time to time. Especially in moments when a player is wildly exceeding or failing to meet expectations.

All lies. This is all a ruse to keep other teams from finding good goaltenders.

Kudos to Sigalet for recognizing something he likes about Rittich. Can’t take that away from him.

Let me ask you, how good of a goalie coach is David Marcoux? And why?

There's something or other you can't make chicken salad out of, but it seems to have slipped my mind.

Thanks for posting that. I have been really curious about how they discovered him. He didn't seem to be on anyone's radar.

Poor Pribyl ran into some bad injury luck. Maybe he never would've cracked the squad, but he never really got the opportunity and went home.

Guy was supposed to be Rittich's English interpreter in Stockton as well.

I don't mind signing these European free agents. Maybe nine out ten don't pan out, but if you keep at it, maybe there's one who ends up a player. In the meantime, you've got bodies for the farm.

If you are in this thread you are probably thinking of NHL goalies. You can’t make chicken salad out of them.

You’re welcome.

Same paragraph could be used to describe goalies and Sigalet. 9 out of 10 won’t improve with his help.

Good coach though.

Rittich is awesome.

And kudos to Sigalet for reaching the one guy in his class that matters.

Or maybe when when reality doesn't fit a simplistic narrative, is the narrative that's wrong?

If the goalie coach was the problem, why have none of those "nine" goalies gone on to do better without him?

The certainly people use to cling to that which is actually unknowable always astonishes me.

Good enough to teach butterfly style goaltending to a predominantly stand up style goalie mid season, on route to 3 consecutive vezina nominations. (But not good enough to turn any top prospects in to nhl backups)
