Best Canadian Team Youth Cores
Current vs future - which Canadian team top 3 relatively young players would you take for now and later? Who would you consider from the Flames trading 1 for 1. There's some pretty interesting debates going on. These top three listed can be replaced by anyone else on the roster should you believe they deserve to be there.
Calgary: Money, JG, Chucky
Edmonton: McDavid, Drai, Puljujarvi
Van: Brock, Horvat, Pettersson
Win: Laine, Scheifele, Trouba (amongst others)
Toronto: Marner, Nylander, Matthews (JT is still *young)
Ottawa: Brady, Stone, Chabot
Mon: Drouin, Kotkaniemi, Domi
Edmonton is of course top heavy. Toronto equally the same. Calgary and Winnipeg have the depth and better supporting casts. Top three for Van certainly are intriguing. Ottawa and Montreal are certainly below the rest.

Norm!

Winnipeg
Toronto
Calgary
Vancouver (Will close the gap)
Ottawa
Montreal
Edmonton - Outside of McDavid, that's not a great three. Drai can't drive a line and JP is probably going to play in Europe next year.

What is with the arbitrary choice of 3 players?
Toronto, Winnipeg and Calgary have much deeper cores, and that is what separates them. Debating how the top 3 compare misses the mark, IMO.

Yeah if we are going top 3 I bump Vancouver & Edmonton up a few spots, as gross as that is.
But Winnipeg, Toronto, & Calgary have significantly more depth.

3 or 4 is just a number. It's true why limit it to 3 players. You could make the topic best youth cores now and for the future and not limit it to a particular quantity.

Reason: I always count Price as Canadiens core, but I guess he wouldn’t be young core.

Flames young core would be Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, Tkachuk, Hanifin. All 4 forwards are ppg players this year and Hanifin is an all situations top 4D
Toronto has Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly filling similar roles.
Jets have the deepest core with Scheifele, Laine, Connor, Ehlers, Morrissey, Trouba (every first rounder from 11-16 they hit on)
Oilers would have McDavid, Draisaitl, Nuge, Klefbom (could argue Larsson and Nurse as well)
I am not sure what the cutoff would be for age but per the criteria above with Stone included in the young core for Ottawa we would go back as far as the 2010 draft. Ottawa and Montreal definitely have the weakest young cores. Winnipeg is the strongest, Toronto would come second for me. When you dig deeper for the rest of the cores I think the depth Calgary puts them ahead of the Oilers and Canucks

Toronto top heavy?? They're stacked with young talent.
I'd go Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Ottawa, Montreal

For Ottawa I didn't really know who to include in their youth core.

One thing Calgary has going for it over some of the other teams is the young defenseman.

Speaking of WPGs young core, what is up with Vesalainen? Started the year in NA with games in Winnipeg and also their farm team. But he's now playing in the KHL for Jokerit? Was that a mutual decision?

No way. Nylander is a huge young asset. You can debate his contract negotiation strategy if you want but a fact that can't be taken away is that there was no way to miss training camp and two months of hockey and then jump right back to where you were.
He'll get back to where he was second half.

..and a contract "stink" takes two sides. The Leafs were probably right to hold steady as they did, but players are still human. He was faced with a team desperately trying to keep his cap hit down and the knowledge that they likely wanted a cheap contract to trade him.
We're so vicious to kids trying to create the best situation for themselves in the NHL for some reason, it's weird. It's always the greedy player, never the greedy team when a negotiation goes bad.

I would label Nylanders situation "kid with a terrible manager who prefers being the center of attention to getting deals done".

It'd make more sense to just look at who each team's core is likely to be for the forseeable future, and just exclude guys past their prime, rather than creating arbitrary age cut-offs. The fact that Scheifele and Gaudreau are turning 26 next year won't change anything about the makeup of those teams or their prospects. By the time they're old enough for their age to really matter, it'll be beyond the horizon where you can predict anything about hockey anyway.
Also, isn't the general consensus that a core is 3 forwards, 2 defensemen and a goalie? That's how I've always reckoned it.
