The IIHF has also adopted a new late hit rule this year. For NHL fans, it means many hits that would look like finishing a check could be called a penalty at the WJC and future IIHF tournaments.
Quote:
A late hit constitutes a bodycheck to an opponent who no longer has control or possession of the puck. The opponent may have been in control or possession of the puck when the defending player committed to making a bodycheck, but the checking player risks a penalty if the flow of the game is such that the opponent is no longer in control or possession of the puck and has completed his action with the puck by the time the bodycheck is made. A late hit can be delivered to an opponent who is either aware or unaware of the opponent making the late hit.
The examples in the IIHF video are pretty concerning. If that is the way they are calling late hits...

Wow, those new hitting rules will be hard to adjust to for physical players. The gist of it from what I can tell is that the only legal hits are to players still in possession of the puck AND are aware of the impending hit. So if a player has the puck, but is not aware of an approaching hit, he is considered vulnerable and the hit will be penalized.
I’m envisioning a future with blue chip prospects dangling the puck through the middle with their heads down watching their own moves and being immune to a body check because of their lack of awareness. Only stick checks from now on...
I don't like the minor penalty example. That's a hockey play. The player gets rid of the puck because he is aware of the impending contact. Not a late hit, not a penalty.
The first example of the 5 minute major makes perfect sense. The puck is gone and the player is vulnerable because of the way the play occurs. It's an unnecessary hit at that point and it takes advantage of a vulnerable player.
But the next example of a major penalty isn't the same at all. The player has his head up and can see the player coming in to check him. The player needed to protect himself a little better, but instead he gets hit square in the chest.
The Match Penalty example is perfectly fine. That's a predatory hit well after the puck is gone. Get that stuff out of the game ASAP.
So a mixed bag of examples to be honest. It will be interesting to see how they call it this tournament. My bet is the Canadian players get more than their share of these calls against them.

Looks like Pospisil will be spending a lot of time in the box if that's how they plan on calling the game.
