Former NHL referee Mick McGeough suffers stroke. Will not recover.

Quote:
this past sunday morning mick went into the hospital with the early signs of a stroke. He went in fighting, just like the mick we all know and love. The past 4 days have been a roller coaster while his family has waited for tests, and updates, all while mick's condition has decreased.

update: It is with sad hearts that we are letting you know that mick will not be recovering, the damage is irreversible. He has been brought back to regina to be with his family at this time. Life support will be removed and he will go on his terms. Thank you so much for your generous support.

Really sad to hear that kind of news. I had my dad suffer a stroke a few years back, we got lucky because my mom recognized what was going on and they got him to the hospital really quickly.
When my mom had her head injury from the fall, we thought she'd had a stroke and same thing, my dad didn't panic and got her to the hospital as quick as he could.
Its sad to read things like, not expected to recover, I can't imagine the emotional stress on his friends and family as they watch the clock.

Very sad news, Mick was one of my favourite refs (nobody waved off a goal with the exuberance of Mick).

That's a shame at 62 years old and my condolences to his family. IMO he was one of the worst officials in the history of the NHL but that has no bearing on how I feel about him as a human being.

That's so sad. One of the most animated refs of all time.
When was his last season in the NHL?

RIP Mick You always brought the intensity and character! In a sea of faceless, nameless pro sports officials wearing black & white, you brought the color, people's opinions be damned.

Mick McGeough officiated his 1000th NHL game here in Calgary. His family was received with large cheers when they came onto the ice for the pre-game ceremony. Could see on his face how he was touched by that.

I was there for that. I was extremely pleased by the fans in attendance for being as classy as they were, especially as he was always booed in previous games.
If I recall correctly, another ref or linesman also chose Calgary to have their 1000th game ceremony for how classy they were with Mick.
Sincerest condolences to the McGeough family.

That is the original go fund me post but the update at the top says he won't be recovering and life support has been removed.
