Michael Ferland... What's the deal?
Ferland is absolutely killing it in Carolina! With another goal tonight that brings him to 6 goals, and 9 points on the year to go along with 21 hits in 9 games.
I just don't understand how he was not able to do that with Guadreau and Monahan for extend periods of time? Are Aho and Teravainen really that different? Yes I know it's early.. and we have seen Ferland do this for bits of the year then completely disappear; however, I've watched a lot of Canes games and he looks REALLY good. Contract year maybe? I don't know but I am kind of disappointed he is not in our lineup anymore... I mean we gave Neal 5 Mil to play on the third line...

I'd imagine this is what is happening. He was lights out for the first half for us last season too.

Ferland was my favorite flame. Going to miss him
I hope he scores 40 this year and gets a massive UFA contract.

A bigger body who can move at times in a relatively physically weak east. I believe that’s simply it. He doesn’t continue that momentum but the east for a big body who can move = success.

I hope he gets paid too, but I'll be glad it's not us doing it. After his inability to do it consistently here and rather doing it in bursts, I'm not buying it yet.
Seemingly great person though, and I hope it all works out for him.

A decent amount is probably contract year motivation, plus being traded for the first time probably lit a fire under his ass to produce as well. I do think a lot of people forget though, maybe since he's a homegrown tough guy, that Ferlands scoring pedigree is there. This guy isn't a bouma, he put up a ton of points in junior for the Wheat Kings. He was streaky but he's definitely not a scrub and I'm not surprised to see him put up points in Carolina.
Where the value comes in to the deal for the Flames though is that he is a UFA at the end of the year and will likely get a huge raise to play for a different team next year. Meanwhile we have a cost controlled Lindholm for multiple years who is just as productive. I bet Ferland and Fox never play a game for the canes after this season and that makes that trade a huge coup for Treliving and the Flames.

Thanks for the insight. I really enjoyed reading your post! I wonder what he will command $ next year

Consistency? They’ve played 8 games.
But Ferland is a really good player. He doesn’t look any different to me. Wasn’t exactly what the Flames needed and he’s going to get a pay raise. The trade worked for all parties involved.

He did. As you said he has 6 goals and 3 assists through 9 games.
Oct 24 - Nov 18, 2017: 7G + 4A through 11 games.
Dec 22 - Jan 11, 2018: 5G + 4A through 8 games.

Lindholm played with them last year and his production is up this year as well. So it isn't about them.
Sometimes a change of scenery is good. And sometimes, a 9 game sample size is a little small to make any significant conclusions about.

Interesting questions for sure. I imagine Carolina fans are asking the same thing about Elias Lindholm. Monahan was also hurt last season. I think Ferland"s biggest issue is consistency but maybe he's going to find that now with a new team. Contract-year doesn't hurt.

Well Ferly and Lindholm were called streaky by both fan bases. Looks like a good trade for both. I miss Ferlys toughness though.

Fair point about the small game sample size, I made sure to allude to that in my op since I know a lot of people would mention that haha. I'm excited to see how the rest of his season goes, but as I mentioned I have watched 6/8 Canes maybe? He certainly looks really good and motivated out there.

I think it was a health issue last year, along with some terrible coaching/leadership in the room. I think Tkachuk and Ferland did a lot of the work that Brouwer should have been doing and it wore them down.
His big test will be the matchups vs Tom Wilson. That is who he will be measured against.
I hope he scores 30 this year and stays healthy.
It would come as no surprise when the Hurricanes play at the Saddledome that Ferland gets a huge ovation while Hamilton gets booed

Honestly didn't see Ferlands toughness last year. That combined with him disappearing completely after his injury, it was hard to feel like we didn't upgrade with Lindholm.
If his production continues over 20 games then I think it's something to talk about. He had a handful of good 10 game segments between stretches of underwhelming play before.

I wonder how much of it if any was coaching.
Ferly is not the only player to show better without GG
