Tell Me About: Tyler Parsons
Well, the goaltending has not had a pre-season that can give fans a lot of confidence. I wasn't able to watch any of the pre-season other than tonights game and havent really had much time to spend looking into the battles that went on.
But most of what I was reading here seemed to indicate that Parsons had some very good time in camp, while Rittich and Gillies (and Smith) have been meh at best all of the way through. Was there a reason that Parsons was cut as early as he was and didn't get a longer look in the pre-season?
I know he's young, but sometimes young players happen. I've always been a fan of Gillies with high hopes for him, and I like Rittich and his personality. Just curious about CPs overall take on the back up (and starter situation) and why Parsons hasn't been part of it for longer given the lackluster performance of the other three.

Parsons is a good goalie, but sometimes he moves around too much and has to come up with a huge save (which he usually does) instead of maybe not being caught out of position as much. He's a good goalie and a great prospect, I think he just needs to work on a few minor things before he's ready to be a full time NHLer. He's close, just needs a bit more work.

He could probably use a good goalie coach to help him refine his game and tighten up his positioning. He is incredibly athletic and has been able to rely on that athleticism in junior, but the pro level is a different monster. I have very high hopes for him and I think he has a great head on his shoulders. He's a proven winner. The AHL is a good spot for him right now.

He needs seasoning for sure.
He will only benefit from playing full time AHL this year. If he is lights out you look at him fulltime NHL next year or if injuries occur you call him up this year for spot duty and see how he does.
G is one position you just dont rush.

I think the idea is Parsons and Gillies splitting up the starts in the AHL while Rittich plays backup for this year. Next season, Parsons gets more starting time in the AHL and Gillies plays backup. Hopefully by then we can see whether or not Gillies has starting potential with Parsons on the verge of becoming an NHLer too.

I know people around here don't have much faith in Jordan Sigalet; the goalie coach in Stockton is Colin Zulianello:

According to his bio he's worked with Matt Murray and Carter Hutton so hopefully he's able to refine Parsons' game in Stockton this year. Aside from being slightly undersized, Parsons has all the tools and has proven himself in high pressure competition.

Oh I have no doubt that was the plan to start camp....im just of the opinion that Rittich may have played his way to Stockton with his performance in pre-season, where as Parsons played decently in limited time which may open the door for an equal work load in the AHL. Who that is with is the only question in my mind.

Yeah sorry, didn't mean to imply he wasn't currently working with a good goalie coach (truthfully I couldn't have told you who Stockton's was before you linked it). Just poorly worded on my part. Agreed, I think a full year in Stockton will be great for his development.

Patience.
Parsons is still adapting to the pro game. A rough rookie season in the ECHL also took a toll on his confidence. Luckily, the organization is having him work with a sports psychologist and other consultants.
If he puts it all together, he has the tools to be a very good goaltender.

Super young, missed a good chunk of last season due to injury, needs to get a full pro season under his belt and see AHL shots to get used to the pro game.

Zuli is a good goalie coach and as much as I wanted sigler fired and him promoted, I want him to work with Parsons more. I think he'll really help and turn him into a starter and be promoted with him to the Flames. Parsons is rough with potential, if he has a big year this year I think he'll be on the team very soon.

I think the speed of the game will shift the goalie style as well from huge but slower cross crease guys, to perhaps slightly smaller but super mobile guys. If that shift occurs, I think Parsons' skill set could be really good in the NHL.

Zulianello would have been helpful in getting Murray on the right track, but I'll take the guy who refined his game in Pittsburgh (Mike Bales) please!

I'm really excited about Parsons.
Loved him in London, and lost my mind when Calgary drafted him. Goalies are unpredictable to be sure, but if you're going to get excited about anyone's junior career his was impressive.
His speed is amazing, and if he's in position he's dominant. He does play wild, especially under pressure - but that is definitely coachable.
What I don't see talked about much is his leadership. He's a vocal guy who likes rallying his team. It's pretty fun to watch coming from the crease, and I think we're going to love seeing it here.

I remember when we got Kipper I researched a bit and read somewhere that the knock on him was basically the same thing. He was very quick but would often over commit and put himself out of position.
And yes, I'm saying Parsons will be great like Kipper.

If parsons can become a kipper like goalie while our core is intact we will be perennial contenders.

It’s 4-3. Give Tyler Parsons the reigns. I watched this kid in London, it’ll turn the year around! Not Mike Smith’s fault but Parsons makes those saves
