Remembrance Day Nov 11, 2020
Take a minute or at the least two.
Today isn’t an easy day for many a Canadian even at the best of times.

My grandfather Hawk who lost an eye in the WWII and was inducted into the PEI hockey hall of fame, and my other grandfather for WWII. They suffered from severe PTSD and had many problems in life but always recounted their memories for me to understand the horror of war and all the other veterans.
I am wondering on Nov 11 if the Canadian flags are flown at half mast?

In this day and age where we're learning less and less in our schools about Canada's military history, and to keep learning the lessons that lead this nation to war and the repercussions of it, as well as the older vets dying off from the two global wars as well as Korea.
We need to keep educating ourselves and our kids on this, its an important part of our heritage and history.
I hope everyone took the time at 11:00 AM to push away from their desks or whatever they were doing and took that moment or two to think about the people that fought in those wars and think about the veterans that even today are struggling.
If you have the means groups like the Veterans food bank can always use the help
https://theveteransfoodbankofcalgary.ca/
Or wounded warrior canada
https://woundedwarriors.ca/?gclid=Cj...hoCLtsQAvD_BwE
Or any of the other veterans or even non veterans charities
If you have family members that served or fought that are still around, take the time today to call them or zoom them or whatever and just talk to them.

I decided to go for a cross country ski at Confederation Park. No music today, I put on the CBC ceremonies on my radio, and took my silence at the place below, to take in what a beautiful country we have the privilege to live in and honour the sacrifices of those who protected it, and still do. Thank you to all who have served.

I haven't ever felt more in my life the importance of remembering the losses that result from state conflicts than I have during the last couple of years. With global powers shifting, nationalism shaping global tensions and risks of major conflicts rising, we should all remember the loss that is experienced when conflicts aren't resolved peacefully. We should remember the past to motivate us in our commitment to peace and avoiding experience of future loss.

Thinking of my grandfather today. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He passed away last December at the age of 87.

I think one of the saddest parts about armistice day is that approximately 11,000 soldiers were still killed or wounded between the time that the armistice was agreed on and the time that it was set to be signed. A casualty rate that was higher than the average throughout the war from what I read.
Some military personnel reached out across the front to the other sides and agreed to stop fighting before the official signing, but others fought more fiercely to get last minute gains to use at the table for negotiations, or for just one last chance at vengeance. Some were also just pessimistic that the armistice would hold and didn't want to lose any advantage. There were also some that simply didn't get the news in time and kept fighting. In some situations, one side unofficially stopped fighting after getting the news only to be viscously attacked by the other side that didn't get the news yet.
It good that communication technology has improved since then and it's unlikely that kind of chaos would happen again.

Most people by now have heard about this I think, but Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast had a WWI Series called Blueprint for Armageddon that is simply fantastic.
It's long, but worth the listen and he is entertaining. A must listen for any history enthusiast.

I had 3 uncles on my dad's side who served in WWII and my Grandpa (claimed me as his grandson because his kid wasn't going to have kids) did too.
My grandpa didn't talk about the war at all until he was in the hospital before he passed. He told me a little bit about what he did. He was injured in combat and then became very ill and was sent back home due to that illness.
I don't know much about two of my uncles, but the other one met his wife in Europe. She was a spy for the Allies too!

I get the point of your post, but want to make sure you know that Nov 11 isn't about celebration.
