Hard to see how the Flames value Hathaway more than Kulak, given the 1 way deal.

So if the award is too much for the flames. Can the flames walk away and Hathaway becomes an UFA?

No. The walkaway salary for player elected salary arbitration is ~ $4.22 million and above.
Once the arbitrator awards the salary, Hathaway will be signed.

Thanks. The salary will be high for a guy that is in the press box or AHL.

Not a big fan of his and I wouldn't be sad if he wasn't with the team moving forward. I hope it's closer to the team's #.
So when does buyout period start? Is it 48 hours after this hearing?

A 48 hour buyout window for the Flames will open 3 days after Hathaway is signed by the Flames or the arbitrator gives out an award.

I don't either, I just wasn't impressed with his consistency every night last night. I've said that if Hathaway is a lineup regular that you have depth problems, plus there are other players clamoring for a shot at the show, the Flames could go through this arbitration exercise for a guy that's going to impact the popcorn budget.
He has to be that bull in a china shop every single night, and after last year, I don't believe he's capable of that.

I wonder if the arbitration decision has ever been the contract immediately bought out.
Also, it sounds like there will be ~4.4m in cap space after Wednesday, with just Hanifin left.
I’m getting the feeling that the plan all along was to bridge him

If he's getting a one way contract he should be happy with $700,000. He's going to be a 13th forward that will get some games on the 4th line. With what the flames have for depth now , I can't see him ever getting back to 3rd line.

Buying out a under million dollar contract to me is really a waste of a buy out.

Not that I recall.
The funniest story with salary arbitration came with the Thrashers and Clarke MacArthur.
The Thrashers went into the arbitration meeting and just asked the arbitrator to immediately award the MacArthur's ask. The arbitrator did so and because MacArthur's ask was above the walkaway threshold the Thrashers immediately walked away.
Would be funny if Treliving goes into the hearing on Monday and says that he has changed his mind and thinks Hathaway is now worth over $4.22 million. Of course the arbitrator might still just go on auto pilot and award Hathaway $2.57 mil in that case.

That's only if they go with 14 forwards. Most likely Lazar or Hathaway will be sent to the AHL. Which would save probably 800k at least. They should have around $5.2 million cap space for Hanifin.

Seeing how the rest of the arbitrations have gone I guess Hathaway should have asked for like $5M and really cashed in!

As long as the number comes in under a million and can be buried I couldn't really care less what he gets. IMO it comes down to a battle between him and Lazar for who gets to eat popcorn with Troy Brouwer all year.

For all those asking if the flames can walk away, or if the flames can sign and then buy out...please remember the Flames we're under no obligation to qualify the player.
In this case, the fact that the flames have offered $650k in arbitration means their offer to Hathaway was likely higher than that. And the $975k Hathaway is asking for means his offer to the flames was likely lower than that. Logic would tell you that they're probably less than $150k apart in actual negotiations.

Yeah hard to see why team/player would risk ruining the relationship as arbitration is prone to do over ~$150K
