Flames re-sign Rittich avoiding arbitration (1 yr, $800k, one way)
https://www.nhl.com/flames/news/flam...?tid=282300716
Looks like one way.
Hathaway (arbitration), Hanifin, and Shinkaruk are the last unsigned RFAs.

Reasonable contract. Would there be any chance he becomes an UFA after next season or is it a guaranteed RFA situation?

Also I believe when Hathaway signs it starts the 48 hour 2nd buyout window (aka will Brouwer be bought out?).

I thought they had a window based on the last arb case. Something like august 2?

Which is Hathaway's arbitration but I believe if he is signed earlier the 48hr starts when he signs.

Believe he is RFA with arb rights again.

The 2nd buyout window opens for 48 hours 3 days after the last arb case get settled or an award is issued.
Hathaway being their last open arb case will start the 3 days once he signs or gets an award.

I’m excited Rittich will have a full season up in the NHL to show whether or not he’s legit. I like our tandem in net going into this season, and with Gilles/Parsons in the AHL I don’t think I personally have ever been more excited about the position as a Flames fan.

no reason to buy him out at this point. What to do with the small amount of cap space that creates?
But we can bring him on the first PP unit to increase his points and trade this guy at the deadline

It would save $3 million in cap space this season. It all depends on the Hanifin contract. If the Flames want to sign him to a 7 year deal they will most likely need the cap space. If a 2 year bridge then no need for the buy out.

The not so “small amount” saved could be the difference between a 2 & 7 year contract for Hanifin.

Like others say, the difference could be what kind of deal you can afford with Hanifin. The other use is simply flexibility to add further depth later on in the season, without trading a decent roster player. This is the last time this season Brouwer can be bought out so if it's possible they will need to do so they have to act now.

Buying out Brouwer also gives us a bit of flexibility going into the deadline. We may need to add to this roster despite it being the best roster we have had in years.
Having a bit of cap room is never a bad thing. Adding someone like Eric Staal as a rental if he makes it there could be a big thing for this team.

Cap aside, if Brouwer isn't one of the top 13 forwards on the team, doesn't it make sense to get rid of him from a roster management point of view?

Sure but we don't know that yet. He wasn't outplayed by Lazar, Foo or Mangiapane last year (yes they had limited games, but even in camp they didn't). He wasn't outplayed by Czarnik on a different team in limited games.

Very cap friendly contract. Personally I hope he becomes the legit backup to Smith.
Rittich has shown there is real potential there to be the reliable back up and perhaps eventually more.

Pretty awesome deal for the Flames with all things considered. You just have to hope there is enough there to supply this team with competent, healthy play in net for the entire season this time around.

The sample size was small but IMO Foo did outplay Brouwer. Also, there's not much to choose between Brouwer, Lazar and Hathaway but IMO tiebreaker goes to the faster skaters. Plus, Lazar can play centre.
